Dear Donna, Don and I are very saddened to learn about Hans. It seems just yesterday that we met him on his way to BU. Always courteous, gentle and quick-witted Hans brightened our day whenever we were lucky enough to cross paths with him. May you be well, may your memories be soothing. He was truly a wonderful mensch, who definitely both helped me in my career and was an inspiration up to the last time we so enjoyably all had lunch together at your lovely house in Woods Hole. Thank you Donna for adding Hans to our family. Hans filled our lives with joy, fully embracing his California family with so much love, sparkling wit and humor. Every year, we so looked forward to our December visits.
When our son was six, we told him Hans was a scientist. We said he could ask Hans any question he wanted. My son turned to Hans and asked, how do you make water? Hans promptly got out a piece of paper, and wrote down the equation for making water. My son still has that piece of paper.
We loved visiting with Hans and Donna in Boston. Hans gave us a wonderful tour of his lab, wonderfully explaining everything to our son who was then 10.
When Donna and Hans visited our home a few years ago, another cousin attempted to teach us all a group family game. Well, every time it was Hans' turn to participate, the room erupted in laughter. He kept us all cracking up so hard, it was impossible to get anywhere in the game. It was one of the highlights of the gathering that we still laugh about today. Hans is one of the funniest people I've ever met.
At every family gathering, Hans filled the room with his love for everyone, with his all-inclusive smile, sparkling eyes, and gentle soul. These memories of all our times together keep me so happy cousin Donna added Hans to our family. All our love, Nancy, Mike & Skyler

There are very few people in life that radiate joy while teaching others how the world works, especially when the world is being examined on the molecular scale. Dr. (Sir) Kornberg made every early morning lecture delightful and most certainly made every one of his students feel privileged to be there. And I can at least speak for myself in saying each of his one-of-a-kind hand-drawn classical biochemical reaction mechanisms motivated me to earn my grade in his class. Truly a phenomenal teacher, and icon to the scientific community. Heartfelt condolences to his family.
