I have known Betsy since she became engaged to Jim, my college roommate, over 57 years ago. We have been through many phases of life together and I have many happy memories of her. After my second wife, Nancy, and I moved from Virginia to Maine, we did more with Jim and Betsy. Nancy first met her at Jims and my 25th reunion at Dartmouth when we all climbed Mt Moosilauke together. In those days we were all enthusiastic hikers. They then attended our wedding where Jim again served as my best man. Over the years we have hiked together, visited at Sharon, and hosted visits in Maine and NH. As we all slowed down, we often lunched in Boston together and once took the ski lift at Bretton Woods to lunch half way up the mountain. Our last lunch was at the Nichols Weston house almost a year ago.
Betsy was a friend you could count on for calm and competent advice. We shared a love of the outdoors and no matter how long since we visited, in ten minutes the intervening time was gone and we were comfortable with one another again. I enjoyed her quiet sense of humor, engaging in serious discussions with her and her caring personality. Of course, I will miss her but I will treasure the time that I was fortunate enough to spend with her. She was a very important constant in my life.

Dear Mr. Nichols and family,
As a resident of Sharon for 36 years and a frequent attender of the Sharon Town picnic in August I came to look forward to seeing you and your family there. You all were always so gracious to talk with me as I asked questions to learn about our beautiful town. Your family held such a treasure trove of history and stories to tell.
Your wife was a lovely and graceful human being. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.

Dear Jim and family,
This is so sad--end of an era. I so enjoyed getting to know Betsy through you at our high school reunions and got to know her better during Wellesley College reunions even though our paths did not cross much at the time we were there. What a remarkable, full and useful life she led. You may remember my sister, Roni, who has long been active as President of her local LWV group in the San Diego area. She joins me in sending sympathy thoughts to you and family.

As I came out of the woods today, I saw the gate opened on McCoy road, then a 4 wheeler at the Sharon cemetery, my heart fell. I wanted to stop, but felt it was not my place. Norma and I are so sorry for your families loss. Betsy was such a beloved woman, and a Great friend I always looked forward to meeting Jim and Betsy, and there family while walking on there property in Sharon, I will truly miss her. I wish the Nichols Family Happy memories,in these very sad times God Bless

Betsy was so lovely to work with. Many times over 30 years I asked her for support from the Pierce Foundation on behalf of a number of non profits and she was always so welcoming and responsive. I think she was as excited as I was when the answer was 'Yes!'. Condolences to her family and friends.

Betsy was a terrific Board member for the New England Forestry Foundation. We will miss her a great deal.
