Mr. Smith, as I would call him, was a fine man with a great sense of humor. He would joke with me as I worked about his house whenever the Smiths needed painting. He will no doubt be missed by many, myself included. My deepest sympathies to the the Smith, Berylson, and Knez families.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Dick Smith. As President and CEO or Board Member at Joslin Diabetes Center for 10 years, I had the opportunity of having numerous interactions with Dick. He had a remarkable mind, and had a tremendous understanding of our institution and the challenges in the entirety of academic health care, as he frequently demonstrated at our board meetings. He was a key resource to Joslin and to me personally as CEO. His generous philanthropy to Joslin dramatically advanced the organization and our scientific programs. Dick had great insight into the importance of that science.
As CEO, I was very fortunate to be able to meet Dick for our one-on-one lunches in preparation for our board meetings. The lunches were both extremely valuable professionally, as well as great fun. In addition to frankly discussing the business of Joslin, we also enjoyed reviewing many other topics and interests, including all things family, children, grandchildren and in Dick’s case, great grandchildren. However, unfailingly, we always ended up on sports, with baseball at the top of the list. He was particularly fond of the story of Red Sox catcher, Moe Berg, who also served as a spy for the U.S. in WW II. At one such lunch at Legal Seafood, I’m very proud to say I introduced Dick to seafood tacos. He told me he had never had tacos before and thanked me. He really enjoyed them!
Needless to say, his passing will leave a tremendous void in the city, within each of the organizations in which he served, and ultimately, in all our lives.

Dick Smith was all and even more than his wonderful synopsis of his life. The Smith and Lurie families have been special lifelong friends of our family for over 75 years. Dicks contributions are indelible and were carried out so quietly, respectably and in an exemplary manner. My mother June Salny and I send our deepest condolences to Dicks children, grand children and great grandchildren and to his dear sister Nancy.
