JOAN H. HULTGREN

1942 - 2020

HULTGREN, Joan H. Age 78, of Ipswich, MA and Pecos, NM peacefully passed away at home on December 23, 2020. Born in Weston, MA to parents Edward and Frances (Shields) Harding, Joan earned her BA from Simmons College, her MA from Cambridge College and a Teaching Certificate from Massachusetts College of Art. The core of Joan's life was making art. As the Prop Master for the Opera Company of Boston, making props for their productions involved painting, drawing, sculpting and carpentry. She loved the magic of the stage, designing sets for productions at the Castle Hill Festival, Masconomet High School and the Ipswich Middle School. She taught Middle School Art for 14 years, with her students winning numerous Scholastic Art awards at both state and national levels. She studied with Lois Tarlow, attending workshops in Maine and New Mexico. Working in charcoal, pastel and oils, she established her own voice as an expressionist artist. She was widely exhibited in juried shows, and her work hangs in many private collections. She was chosen to represent the Pecos National Monument in the designing of the Christmas ornament for the White House in 2007. She is survived by her husband, Bror Hultgren; and children, Britt Hultgren, Katrin Hardikar and Bror Hultgren; and four grandchildren, Drew Hultgren, Emma Hultgren, Maja Hardikar and Deven Hardikar. A Memorial Service for Joan will be held when it is safe to gather.
