William Tucker Obituary

William Scott "Tex" Tucker passed away on Jan. 1, 2011, in Bozeman.

Tucker was born Feb. 28, 1950, in Kellogg, Idaho, and attended Kellogg High School. He worked a few odd jobs including jobs with the railroad and the phosphate plant before pursuing his true love of music.

He started playing music professionally at the age of 14, while still in high school. He had his first paying gig in 1964 with a band called the Hustlers.

Shortly after high school Tucker moved to Hawaii where he attended the University of Hawaii as an English major (and a long-boarder). He was only 12 credits away from graduating when his passion for music really became apparent.

In 1978 Tucker formed the John Colter Band. The band toured the Northwest for the next eight years and became widely known for its entertaining, high-energy live shows. In 1984 the band released its only album. All the songs on the album were written and arranged by Tucker.

After the Colter Band parted ways in 1986, Tucker played in a few variations of a band called the Textones. Soon, Tucker started to pursue his solo act. He first played solo at the Filling Station on Oct. 22, 1988, and the Haufbrau on Oct. 23.

The show at the Haufbrau went so well that it prompted a three-days-a-week, 21-year run. Week in and week out you could find Tex in the corner of the Hauf, under the red light, singing his heart out. And that's exactly what made Tex such a legend. He poured every ounce of his soul into every note, and it showed. His passion was obvious the second you walked through the doors. He would tear through classics like, "Copperhead Road" and "Tree Top Flyer," and would perform medleys by Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and The Beatles. He would mix in some originals like, "World's Richest Man," "One Good Time Tonight," and "She'd Never Lie," also performed by Montana Rose.

In 2001 Tex released a solo album titled, "Between the Tracks." It was his way of getting back to his electric roots. His guitar tones were reminiscent of Joe Walsh, J.J. Cale, Johnny Lang, and even Pink Floyd at times, demonstrating his versatility with the instrument. And in true Tex fashion, each song on the CD tells a story.

Tex spoke through his music, and his spirit will forever reside in that red lit corner of the Haufbrau. He was also a passionate father, son, brother, uncle, husband, grandfather and friend.

He is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Tucker; and his stepfather, Edward Lien.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joy Tucker; his mother, Dorothy Lien; brother, Kenny Tucker; son, Dustin Tucker; son, Jamie Albertini; daughter, Alason Hill; and his grandchildren, Abbriana, Braden, Heidi, Georgie and Cale.

William Scott "Tex" Tucker was an incredibly talented musician and a beautiful person. Tex signified what it meant to be a Montana Musician, and his spirit will forever be engraved in the Bozeman music scene. He will be missed, but his music and his passion will always be a part of anyone who was lucky enough to see him perform.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Eagles in Bozeman. There will be photos, speakers and live music. Donations will be appreciated.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service; www.dokkennelson.com.

Brother Tex, the stories we had and told each other never got old. I'm glad I bought that Silvertone electric guitar back in the day. You took it to another level.

You are the best guitar player to leave the mining camps of North Idaho. I look forward to picking a few old songs with you on the back porch.

By now you have met my Grandson Kris, and hope you show him a couple of hot licks.

Forever, Your Big Brother, Kenny Wray, aka Ramblin Raymond, Silverton Idaho.

Can't count the number of great nights I had listening and drinking with Tex in the Hauf. Hadn't seen him in 15 years but the news is tough to take. He brought a lot of smiles to many and helped even more love music.

Ah Tex my friend. All six years I lived in Bozeman, 1994 til' 2000, the high light of my week was performing with you. I so enjoyed you personally and our times together outside the Hauf were even better, although when the magic was in the room we so enjoyed those moments of damn hot music. I think and have thought about you constantly and wish at times we were together, feeding off of each other, creating great sound. I thank you for all the shots and pints of Moose Drool, which wore a ring in the corner brick closest to you on the top corner of the fireplace. You knew I was a poor Florida Cracker who could barely afford a drink, but I think you so appreciated my harmonica playing that those shots and beer opened the doors of creativity. Thanks TEX I so miss you!! D.E. "Dead End" Herndon. All the Best!!

scott and i crossed paths many times back in the 80's. he was such a nice guy, always gracious and kind to me. i always looked up to him, and watched him play in awe. he always had a great sound, with that schecter strat and that old ratty silvertone, fantastic! he never acted like he was better than anyone, and always available to answer questions. he was a very big part of my musical education. he was one of my heros. i will miss you, scott. rest easy, brother.

How wonderful it is to know that Scott had such a positive impact in the lives of so very many. Please know that Scott's Nebraska relatives mourn his passing deeply. Time passed too quickly and intentions to visit always got put off till tomorrow. We'll always remember Scott for his love of life, warm smile, incredible talent, and willingness to help others. A nephew, a cousin, and most importantly a dear friend has passed all too quickly. We're sure he's playing his guitar and catching up with those who've gone before! Please know that you're in our thoughts and prayers! The Schoens....Sadie, Arnie, James, Jerry (Karen, Janelle, Jenn, & Justin), Julene

I was a bartender at the Friendly Tavern, in Belgrade, when my boss, Vicki Bovey, told me we were having the John Colter Band playing at our bar that weekend. I couldn't believe it! The JCB! I had been shakin' to the band, at the Cat's Paw, every time I could--then she told me not to tell anyone because they were playing as an unknown country band called "Tex Tucker and the Twisted Twangers". Our regular customers were in for a real surprise when they came in and saw the JCB, all dressed up like cowboys, jammin' out the tunes on our tiny dance floor.
We ended up opening up the doors and partying out back till closing time. That was the first of four or five times that they played out there and it was wall to wall every time. Scott, you touched so many lives over the years--your music will be on the wind forever. You will be missed. I'll be listening, old friend. Sue (formerly Visser) Fregien, Bozeman, MT

Scott, wow, the memories..spending nights at your house in Smelterville and Pinehurst, good times. Playing at the Steelworkers Hall in Kellogg, you, Danny Magnus, Mike Lent, Dave Cowles, Tom Carver and myself. We only did it one time and we all wanted you to have the money to pay off your keyboard. You were at your best when you had an instrument of any kind in your hands. Thanks for the good memories and for being a friend.

Scott, I know I never actually got to meet you... But for the longest time I've had these strange skills for singing and playing music, and now I know that I must have gotten them from you. I truely wish that I had gotten the chance to meet you. Maybe some day I'll be able to see you again. All I know is, I will never forget you Grandpa!

Tex Tucker was one of the first great musicians that I ever saw play the guitar. I always felt grounded whenever I heard him play "The City of New Orleans" or "Pancho and Lefty." I will always remember the wonderful sound his guitar made when he was playing it. Tex's influence gave me the start on a great musical journey that has never ceased to heal my wounds and fill my life with happiness. Thank you, Tex, for every song you sang.
