RUBEN GARCIA Obituary
Born in San Benito, Ruben was a lifetime resident of Brownsville. He joined the Brownsville Police Dept. at 21 and served a record 42 and a half years before retiring in 1991. Ruben was also a lifetime parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and was especially proud of the fact that he was the first child baptized there.
Ruben is preceded in death by his parents, Maria de Jesus "Chucha' and Manuel Garcia; his first wife, Luz G. "Lucy" Garcia; and two daughters: Lydia Pearl "Poe" Garcia and Janey Ybarra.
Ruben is survived by his wife of 21 years, Martha Fuentes Garcia; a son, Ruben S. (Nellie) Garcia Jr.; two daughters, Maria Cristina (Miguel) Gonzalez and Loraine G. (Kevin+) Knoch; 8 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way, 1 great-great-grandson with 1 on the way; and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today Friday, Dec. 19th and continue through 4 p.m. at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. Visitation will resume at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1200 Lincoln, where a rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20th at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Military rites will be conducted by Mr. Raul Leal and the American Legion Honor Guard in conjunction with full police honors rendered by members of the Brownsville Police Department.
Ruben's grandchildren are honored to be serving as his pallbearers.

Ruben and Christina and Family, Our deepest condolences and sympathy on the loss of your Father. As I was reading the obituary I was remembering when as kids we would always go by your Grandmother "Chucha" store to buy candy. Would sometimes see your Dad and was always so scare of him. My condolences to the Garcia Family. Ruben and I knew each other
"all our lives". I lived on 13th Street growing up and Ruben lived
behind the Buena Vida Project where he grew up with my cousins,
the Venos, friends, the Bennetts and the Vidals, the Williams, among other good friends and neighbors.
One of my Veno cousins was down in Brownsville in August of this year and I called Ruben to come and visit with us, which he gladly did.
We reminisced about the "old times" with "mucho gusto". We talked about many things. We told him we were proud of his service to the
people of Brownsville. What a record he set!!! May he Rest in the Peace of our Lord.

What a wonderful life we had with Tio, Aunt Lucy and all my cousins down in Brownsville. From home to home to home, the rooftop, the store, the orchard and the berries in the tree. There are so many memories I will have of the times we all had together, weekends, thanksgivings, Christmas and Easters. My wife fondly remembers sharing white lightning with Tio at the last house.
