Andrew Black Obituary

Andrew Robert Black

Essex - Andrew Robert Black, the beloved son of Rob and Alyssa (Hughes) Black and much loved brother of Victoria Ann and Steven William Black, died at the age of 23 on December 6, 2018 at his home in Essex, Vermont. He was a 2014 graduate of Essex High School.

Andrew was a true son of Vermont who loved hiking the Green Mountain Trails and found beauty in everything he saw. He was a gifted athlete; hockey was his passion and he was a rabid fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He was a young brewer, having started at age 16, and was fascinated by the art and science of using traditional ingredients to create innovative Vermont beers. Toward that end, he was a valued employee at "Lawson's Finest Liquids" where he was learning his craft. Andrew was kind, generous of heart, and known for his smile and laughter that could light up a room. He loved animals, most especially his dog Biggie, and Biggie adored him. In addition to his immediate family and dog, Andrew is survived by his grandparents Shirley Snyder, Bill and Veronica Hughes, and Bill and Karen Black, as well as his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Andrew Black was an adventurous spirit who loved deeply and was loved in return. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, family, and co-workers alike.

A public viewing will be held on December 13, 2018 at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction, VT from 3:00-6:00 pm.

"Lawson's Finest Liquids" at 155 Carroll Road, Waitsfield, Vermont is hosting a celebration of Andrew's life on Friday, December 14, 2018 from 6:30-8:30. Anyone who knew and loved Andrew is encouraged to come and contribute their stories, memories, and share in his favorite brews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Andrew's name be made to the Green Mountain Club. Additionally, the family asks that you please consider lobbying your State Representative with the following: "In honor of Andrew R. Black, we ask that you work for legislation that imposes a reasonable waiting period between firearm purchase and possession to provide a cooling off period to guard against impulsive acts of violence."

Alyssa, I heard your interview on NPR. I don't know your family, but I'm still very sorry for your loss. I have also lost a loved one to suicide, and there's no pain like it. Thank you for speaking out. Your love for Andrew really shows.

Alyssa, I also didn't know Andrew but I just heard the interview with you on NPR and was touched by your closing comment about not being ashamed of the way in which he died. The way I've learned to reach peace with the deaths of loved ones is a kind of correlary:

The best way to honor a person's life,
Is to accept their death.

I pray this can add some small measure of comfort as you grieve for your son.
Sincerely,
Ben

I just heard your appearance on NPR, and I am so sorry to hear about Andrews passing. Please know, there are scores of us out here who are very understanding of your loss, your sons feelings, and we know you are absolutely right: there is no shame, no judgement. 23 years of a young mans life and live are worth far more than a few seconds. I appreciate you sharing your story, and I wish you and your family much peace in this difficult time. Take care of yourselves. All my best, and deepest condolences. Mark from Massachusetts.

My family's heart goes out to you as my nephew of 42 years also took his life(Dec. 11th,2018) with his hand gun. He was diagnosed bipolar years before his purchase. Medical records should be checked as well as a 24(48hrs. Even better) hour waiting period should be mandatory. Once again I grieve and feel the pain of your loss. God bless.

I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story. I saw it on The Today Show.In 2012, my 27 year old son shot himself with a gun. He used a so called friend's gun. I believe background checks (including mental health history) along with at least a 48 hour waiting period (really much longer) should be passed as a strict law.God bless you.Sincerely, Jan Ginn

This is so saddening for me....such a kind and interested guy. I noticed his energy and zest for music and work when he worked the bottles at EDB. He was also extremely helpful and encouraging for one of my boys who worked with him. In the midst of my life's turbulence in my own life this really hit me hard. Prayers and much love to the family and all the friends. We gotta be there for one another.....Will miss his accepting and adventurous spirit.
