GARY SUDOL Obituary

GARY SUDOL Morrisville - Gary Sudol, 53, died peacefully on Nov. 8, 2010 at his home in Morrisville with his loving family and close friends by his side. Gary was born March 28, 1957 in Passaic, N.J., the son of Frank and Margaret Foster Sudol of Columbus, N.J. He graduated from high school in Oakland, N.J. in 1975 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Johnson State College in 1982. He married his best friend and loving partner, MaryEllen Shea, on Aug. 20, 1988 in Stowe. Gary had many passions, among them being a fine woodworker and accomplished artist, specializing in photo-real landscapes, and he also achieved a Second Degree Black Belt. Gary craved the outdoors, especially taking photos of the clouds, pastures, mists and sunsets, cows and horses. When not photographing, he was usually found working away in his incredible vegetable garden, and his downtime was spent skiing, mountain biking, cycling and paddling on the Green River Reservoir with his wife and children. Gary contributed more than 25 years as a member of the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol. One of his greatest winter joys was touring his friends and buddies off trail, finding the "pooder and floof." Gary was a great builder, and he and his wife built their own home from the ground up with all the "Gary" extra special touches. Gary's family and friends were the most important part of his life. He'll miss his friends at Dunlavey's Black Belt Academy and the crew at Sissler Builders, and especially the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol. He is survived by his wife, MaryEllen Sudol; their children, Jaynie and Ian Sudol; his parents, Frank and Margaret Sudol of Columbus, N.J.; and a brother, Glen Sudol and wife, Kyrsten, and their children, Montana and Jake of Barnegat, N.J. Special bonds include Rick and Karen Williams of Warwick, N.Y., Wayne and Cyndy Williams of Jackson, Wyo., Warren Rankin, Top Rankin Farm, of Johnson, Dave Braun (Pod) of Ottowa, Quebec, Tom Eckert of Morrisville, Tom Scarf of Elmore, Wilson of Washington, D.C., Tim Torrey of Johnson , Carl Wrighton of Hyde Park, and Duncan Blaine of Stowe. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who came by the house to talk to Gary and hold his hand, and a much appreciated thanks to Lamoille Community Connections for allowing us this time to be together as a family in order to care for Gary. Calling hours will be held at the White-Fiess Funeral Home, 165 Brooklyn St., Morrisville on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Gary's Life will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010 at the Stowe Mountain Base Lodge beginning at 11 a.m, followed by a pot luck brunch. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gary's memory may be made to Lamoille Community Food Share, P.O. Box 173, Morrisville, VT 05661 or to the Sudol Family Trust (for the benefit of Gary's children), c/o TD BankNorth, Morrisville, VT 05661.

I spent my first year at Johnson with Gary on a small dorm floor in Governors. Gary's warmth, friendly style, devilish antics, and inclusive nature were not lost on anyone on my hall or at JSC. Those of us who lived closely to him on that hall were amazed by the artistic magic that he generated everyday. Pottery, lithograths, oils, carving, photography...he quickly mastered every medium he touched. His new projects and art forms were a celebration to all to see and experience. He was a one in a million kind of guy. Gary's artwork brought nature's beauty into incredible focus and clarity. I feel very lucky that I spent 4 good years with this incredible man, friend, father, role model, and artist.
Gary, you are an inspiration to everyone who ever had the priviledge of knowing you. Rest in peace my good friend, you will live in our hearts forever.

My deepest sympathy to the Sudol family. I was a classmate and friend of Garys at JSC. Later we both skied on the MMSP.
He was truly unique and talented. "To live in the hearts of others is to never die"

MaryEllen, I remember the weekend you met Gary. A long long time ago. I'm sorry our paths have not crossed in many years but I still hold on to the fun memories he had teaching at Loon and escaping to Stowe to ski "with the big boys". I'm sorry for your loss, but I am glad you were able to bring much happiness to Gary's short life. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. Gary was a very good friend at JSC and since I lived nearby in NJ we shared many a trip from home to college together. He was a wonderful human being, a real gentleman, had a great sense of humor and a was a very talented artist. I gave up trying to keep up with him on the slopes. An early Gary original hangs in a place of honor in my home and his friendship has a place of honor in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Gary will be missed by his friends, family and community. I know what the family is going through and encourage them to lean on their family and friends during this difficult time. Gary was a staple at the Taekwondo classes and testings and I respected his skill and Stamina, as well as his support when I was part of the testing. We never stop being students and I think that Gary embodied that. I hope that his family can find comfort in the support of his family and friends
