OSTERVILLE — Marc M. Surprenant, of Osterville, passed away at the age of 49 on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. He was born in New Bedford to Michael Surprenant and Cecile LaPointe in 1961.

Marc spent most of his school years in Southern California where he was a star swimmer and water polo player, earning a scholarship to USC.

As a young man, he returned to the East Coast where he helped popularize the triathlon movement in New England. He went on to compete in several world-class triathlons including the Hawaiian Ironman where he placed 8th in 1986. Additionally he finished 2nd place in the Ironman, New Zealand. At the height of his sports career, he was featured on Channel 5's "Chronicle" and appeared on the cover of Tri-Athlete magazine.

A true renaissance man, Marc was also a talented artist whose paintings and murals have graced the walls of many establishments throughout the Cape and beyond. He will be remembered for his joie de vivre and his passionate love of music, art, family and the finer things in life.

Marc touched many lives and many hearts. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Marc is preceded in death by his father, Michael P. Surprenant. He is survived by his mother, Cecile LaPointe of Manzanita, Ore., sisters Keri Dempster of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Nicole Wilson of Dover, N.H., four nieces and a nephew as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

Still can't believe that you're gone...The last couple of times that we spent together were very special...just doing the simplest of things, but you always made every day count. You were truly a kind, generous, and thoughtful soul, and this became more evident in each passing year. Don't know why the "good" always die young...miss you already..

Marc, I still can't believe that you're gone....Just thinking of the last few times that we spent time together..You were always the positive, upbeat, passionate one. Your life was cut way too short...Why do the "good die young?"

I'm absolutely shocked and deeply saddened to hear this tragic news. Marc will always be missed and never ever forgotten. A fierce competitor and yet a sensitive artist, an extremely rare combination.
With sad irony I'll always remember Marc singing "I'll Remember You" with the band on Sunday nights at the "Cat". We'll "All remember you"!!
One fond memory; Marc was driving down W.Main, on his bicycle passing me on the left, dressed in full gear, complete with helmet, shades etc., I had no idea who this guy was cruising immediately along side of me next to the drivers side window (at probably 40 to 45 MPH), I was looking at this guy in shock thinking this guy's got to be crazy. Then he just cracked an ear to ear grin, I just immediately broke up and yelled "SOUP". When he was sure I recognized him he easily picked up speed and left me in the dust!
A positive, talented, highly respected gentleman and just a great overall human being. You shall be loved and missed greatly by many, many people.

Marc,
You are such an amazing kind soul. I am lucky to have known you.Your smile,Your joy and your happiness was so contageous and I thank you for that. You made so many of my days tolerable when you would just come in for a quick coffee at the store, You would always leave me with a smile on my face from just seeing your friendly face and talking for a few moments.. a short hello from you could make my day ..Marc.. You will be missed, But never forgotten my friend. Sail on...

Marc,
Dan, Max and I will truly miss you. Thank you for being such a great friend to Dan and a "surfboard" to Max at Wequaquet Lake. I know how much Dan liked spending time with you. He won't have to share his lasagna with you. He never wanted me to tell you when I made it because he wanted it all to himself. I'll miss your great smile, kind words, sense of humor and crazy stories.
Peace and love to you.

I was so sad to hear (just today) of Marc passing away :( I cannot believe it. What a wonderful person he is!!! He always loved to show me his paintings, which he was so proud of, and play songs for me on his guitar. I had not seen him recently but I do wish I had seen him alot more often since he always put a smile on my face. I am happy to say, altho it is very sad to know he is gone, that i'm sure glad that I knew Marc and that I was a part of his life and that I could call him a true friend. He will truly be missed by myself and many others.

I was so sad to hear you've gone ahead of the rest of us. I haven't seen you since the 80s but remember you for embodying the best of what a person could be. Your infectious enthusiasm for life was a gift that I'll hang on to and try to share as readily as you did. I feel obligated to play and laugh a little harder in your honor. Strength to your family and friends.

Soup,
I can still see you in your tinfoil solarium.
I can still smell the steaks sizzling on the ghetto grill.
I can still feel the soreness in my arm from throwing several thousand pitches of wizball.
And I can still taste the incredibly authentic chili relenos.
But most of all soup, I can still hear you playing 'Coco Pride' on our beloved Brown Betty.

And so, to a great friend and brother whose high energy spirit and rich, rich soul will always be alive in my heart, I simply say, I love you soup.

I was so sad to hear of Marc's passing. He was always so full of energy & friendly to all. I will never forget when we were at Tomatoes last year & my 5 year old daughter (one of his regulars) had requested pasta aglio y olio with NO GREEN STUFF. When she discovered one tiny spec of parsley Marc put it on his finger and said "WHAT???? I am going into the kitchen RIGHT NOW to reprimand the chef..this is rediculous!" & off he marched. We talk about this all the time. He was so funny. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with your family in this time of sadness.

Completely stunned by the news today...Many memories of skiing with marc on the annual Starbuck's/ Sam diego's ski trip..one particular memory sticks in my mind...skiing at Loon..I was halfway down the run and saw Marc going up the lift..Being a fairly aggressive skier myself, I reached the bottom in quick time, to find Marc already there..don't know how he did it...just blew my mind...but then again he was an amazing athlete and all around nice guy, always surrounded by excitement...He will be sorely missed....

Thousands of miles biked, roads run, waters crossed - swam and skated. Waves ridden, one year over 300 days in the surf. Thousands of songs sung, dances danced, meals cooked and savored.
A Marc story: He invited my wife and I to sail a small boat. "You know how to sail Marc?" "Come on Tommy get in". Within minutes we were smack dab in the path of a charging Nantucket ferry. "COME ABOUT- NO OTHER WAY" We were laughing so hard my wife peed her shorts. He turned it around at the blast of the ferry's horn.
I miss you my friend; my heart aches.

He gave creditability to the New England triathlon scene. As California was the mecca for elite athletes Marc was the Cape's contribution to the elite world. Many top flite triathletes have come and gone from this region but Marc was the first and the most colorful! He rankled some and laughed with others but he never gave less than his best. I still have his Tri-Athlete magazine cover.
