Leslie Leupp Obituary

Leslie Leupp Leslie Leupp, 66, of Lancaster, died unexpectedly on Feb. 4, 2011, while vacationing in Pattaya, Thailand. He was Professor of Art in the School of Visual Arts at Penn State before his retirement in 2006. He joined Penn State in 1988. He received his MFA degree from Indiana University and held teaching positions at Ball State University, Indiana University, and Texas Tech University prior to his arrival at Penn State. He was nationally recognized for his metalworking and jewelry design and served as head of the metal arts area in the School for many years. He has an extensive exhibition record in both national and international venues and was the recipient of numerous awards, honors, and grants, including a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Leslie was a superb mentor for his students, a compassionate, caring man whose creativity and vision extended into every area of his life. In recent years, he became a passionate admirer of Asian art, and leaves an extensive collection of artifacts collected during his many trips to Thailand. Leslie is survived by seven siblings and many close friends and colleagues. He will be missed by anyone who got to know him well. Donations in his honor, to be used for student scholarships, may be sent to the School of Visual Arts in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State.

Leslie Leupp was a very special talent and personality. I was an Instructor at Ball State University in the Department of Design in the late 1970's. Les became a close friend of mind and spent a lot of time together with my family in our home. His creativity and humanity were well noted. Very sorry to hear of his passing.
