Raymond Johnson Obituary

Raymond G. Johnson, Jr. Charleston - Raymond G. Johnson, Jr. joined the angels, his parents (Raymond G. Johnson Sr. and Mary Huggins Johnson), and his sister (Melvina Johnson Bruce) in heaven on March 20th, 2020 after a full and joyful 87 years of life. His services will be private. Ray was a proud graduate of The Citadel, where he was the Regimental Commander of Cadets. He proposed to his bride, Anne Boroughs Johnson, on his graduation day - the same day he was offered a job with DuPont; resulting in one of the best days of his life, he always said. After graduation and prior to his work at DuPont, Ray served in the United States Army as a Captain in Taiwan. Ray and Anne later had three children who they spoiled with love; celebrating each of their graduations, weddings, and the births of grandchildren. They spent their golden years dancing, golfing, traveling the world, mentoring young people, and hosting loved ones at their homes. Ray retired from DuPont Company in 1993 as Vice President of Manufacturing for the fibers business in perfect time to join his six grandchildren (and later 3 great-grandchildren) in play and fun, which seemed to be his rightful place. He filled their and the rest of his family's lives with wild stories (flying off barn roofs, inventing things, amateur sailing, etc), exciting adventures (treasure hunts, fishing bets, toy parades, crabbing, etc.), silly jokes, career advice, celebrations, encouragement, and repeated laughs that made bellies ache. He is survived by his wife, Anne Johnson; daughter, Julie Ferry and her husband, David; son, Raymond G. Johnson III and his wife Carol; daughter, Amy Miller and her husband, Tom; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Ray will be remembered for a million different reasons, but especially for the light he was in the world, his brilliant sense of humor (and resulting chuckle), and the way he made people feel. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America . Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel. Ray was quite a gentleman and shared in the conversations during meals at the round table where he always sat in the Frederick dining room at Bishop Gadsden. I was honored to first meet Ray last year while visiting my mother after her move to assisted living at BG. Ray was always polite and cordial, visiting with his wife before joining his buddies at the dining table. This winter I reacquainted with Ray in the Cloister wing at BG, where my mother had moved. I will miss him.

Ray was a wonderful neighbor when he and Anne lived across the street from us in Country Club II. I will always remember Ray as a happy man who loved to laugh and could tell wonderful stories. Ray stayed active with his mentorship at the Citadel, his involvement with the restoration of Grace Church, and he was also very involved at the Country Club of Charleston. Ray adored his his wife and children. I was blessed to have worked with Ray and Anne with three of their real estate transactions and Ray was the nicest client I've had the pleasure to work for.

Herb and I are so sorry for your loss and we have your entire family in our thoughts and prayers.

Ray was a wonderful man and neighbor! Our family vacationed with the Johnson family after they left Waynesboro. So many funny stories of Ray, including sailing the boat almost into the dock and getting my dads car out of the ditch in his white patent leather shoes and belt. Could not meet a nicer man than Ray Johnson. Much love to the family!

We in the Baker School of Business at The Citadel send our sincerest condolences to Ray's family and friends. Ray was a great supporter of the School of Business, including serving as a member of our Advisory Board and a founding chair of our Mentors Association. We were honored to give him the Leaders of Principle Award and induct him into the Baker School of Business Hall of Fame in 2006. He will be greatly missed by all in the Baker School of Business.

I will always miss Ray's warmth and love. I will always remember his never ending awareness and protection he gave Anne. He was always caring for her, I will never forget his pride in his children and his big smile when he mentioned his grandchildren
