Mary Ann Pearlstine Aberman passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2026. She was 90 years old. She was born in Charleston (the daughter of Milton and Cecile Pearlstine), graduated from Moultrie High School and attended Agnes Scott College. She left school to marry Eddie Aberman. She was an army wife before moving to Rock Hill. She often let her family know that Rock Hill was a big change from Charleston.

Mary Ann had high intelligence and a sharp wit. She never made less than an “A” in any class in school (which she also often let her family know). She was an accomplished knitter and loved playing bridge. She enjoyed meeting with friends in the Pine Lakes Garden Club and the Politeia Club.

She spent a lot of time taking care of the special needs of her children, working with physical therapists, special education schools and other programs. This led to her becoming focused on developing resources and facilities for children and adults with special needs. Ultimately, Mary Ann was a leader in creating the York County Board of Special Needs and a network of group homes that allow many adults with special needs to remain in the community and live in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Mary Ann was an attentive and loving mother and grandmother. She had a refined sense of fashion that she passed along to grandchildren.

Mary Ann’s husband, Eddie, her sister Barbara, and her cousins Jane, Edwin and John predeceased her. Mary Ann is survived by two children, Ann Aberman of Columbia, and Mickey Aberman (Linda MacDonald) of Charlotte. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Alex Aberman (Rachel Laney), Kate Aberman and Elias Aberman (Marley Goldman), and although most of her friends have gone before her, she is survived by her close friend of nearly 60 years, Brenda Heath.

The family is incredibly grateful to the team of caregivers who took loving care of Mary Ann and enabled her to live at home for the duration of her final illness. They also appreciate the help of Hospice and Community Care and of Mary Ann’s physician and friend, Tracy Timony.

The family will receive friends at Mary Ann’s home in Warrington Place in Rock Hill on Sunday, March 15 from 4:00pm – 8:30pm. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. A burial will take place Wednesday, March 18 at 11:00 am in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Ave., Charleston, SC at the corner of Brigade St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Mary Ann’s name to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29732, or at www.hospicecommunitycare.org, or to the York County Disabilities Foundation at maxabilities.org.
