Elsie Shaw Obituary

Elsie Babbitt Shaw CHARLOTTE - Beloved Charlotte native and artist extraordinaire Elsie Shaw passed away Saturday morning, June 27, 2015. Daughter of Charlotte mayor Victor Shaw and Elsie Aileene Babbitt, Elsie made her home in New Smyrna Beach, FL and spent her last years with her niece in Gastonia. Born in December 1929, Elsie graduated Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC, attended Mt. Vernon Jr. College and received her BA from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. An exceptional golfer, Elsie won tournaments across the Carolinas. She studied portrait painting in Sarasota, FL under Jerry Farnsworth and took classes at the Ringling Museum. She won many awards including the Piedmont Purchase from the Mint Museum of Art, the Alabama National (Mobile, AL), the Juried Arts National (Tyler, TX), the Winter Park Festival (FL), the Springs Annual (SC), the North Carolina Annual (Raleigh), the Gulf Coast Annual, the Savannah Coastal Empire Annual, the Mid-Florida Builders Assoc. Winning Design, the New Smyrna Beach Festival, the Salmagundi Club Prize from the Nat'l. Academy of Design in New York and the Grumbacher Gold Medal, Daytona Beach, FL. Her works grace the walls of many a home in Charlotte and across the country. She is probably best known in Charlotte for her sculptures of Hugh McManaway at the corner of Queens and Queens and Providence and "Miss Anne & Dan" a few blocks down at Queens University. Public pieces in Florida cities Tallahassee, Daytona, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach and Port Orange are just as endearing, capturing the attitudes and emotions that are trademarks of Elsie's work. A listing of the museums, corporate and private collections enjoying Elsie's work would fill this page. Always the entertainer, Elsie was a joy to be around. The party started when she entered the room. Elsie loved people and all their funny ways, as is evident in her art. Her favorite motto was "no fool, no fun". We will miss her opera-singing voice, her infectious laugh and her quick repartee. Those of us so lucky will carry our favorite "elsie-isms" with us always. She is survived by her nephew and niece, Victor Shaw III and wife Marsha, Babbitt Shaw Johnston and husband Tom, loving cousins and a multitude of friends. There will be a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery at noon on Monday. A memorial service for her friends in Florida will be arranged at a later date. No flowers please. Memorials should be sent to UNC-TV, 10 TW Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709 as Elsie greatly enjoyed their programming these last few years or, as would really please her, support your local artists! About 20 yrs ago I saw Elsie's metal figurines of orange grove workers & orange trees at the Citrus Club, a fine restaurant at the top of a high rise office building in Orlando. I asked for artist's name & I carried her name in my wallet for years knowing she lived in New Smyrna Beach and I had a condo there. I was finally able to meet her at a party at the beach. My son & I helped her shovel sand into sandbags at fire station at beach prior to a hurricane. She was an inspiring lady. My son Peter Melvin now lives in Charlotte. When I visit him, I will think fondly of her in her resting place. My Dad's family is from New Bern, NC settled in 1710...very old Carolinians.... Kornegays

I had many good times at her tiny, funky house and backyard workshop. It really suited her. She had a great laugh.

Elsie graciously shared her talents with others. Under her tutelage, I made a small palm tree, soldering the leaves onto the trunk. I will burn a candle in front of it, in memory of the light that she cast on the world around her.

Elsie's art legacy is vast. Yet, those of us who live in New Smyrna Beach FL can see her work in the Children's Room of the New Smyrna Beach library. Elsie's charm, wit and keen understanding of human nature were manifested in her sculptures and paintings. Elsie was an especially good friend to have. She was delightful to be around. I miss her laughter--mostly the giggle. Even at 80 she stilled created mischief. In heaven she is telling God how to put more personality in His sculptures. She was blessing in my life and I am grateful for our 15 years of friendship. Love and peace to you my dear Elsie. I know Midi was happy to see you again.

Even though I never had the pleasure of meeting Elsie, I heard such wonderful, loving and fun stories about her. As well as having seen some of her wonderful artwork. I know she will be missed. My deepest condolences.

What wonderful memories I have of Elsie. As kids, she made my brothers, sisters, and I squeal with delight at her Woody the Woodpecker imitation and other crazy sounds she would entertain us with. Her Girdle Buster Pie was our favorite. We spent many wonderful days in El Dora and she always took us on exciting rides in her flat bed vehicle. And her laugh was the best. I am lucky to have a very large painting of hers on my wall. (1963 painting). It belongs to my Aunt, but it is in my home. She spent many days in our home. When all the adults were socializing in the main living room, Elsie was always with the kids. What a wonderful person she was. I will cherish the memories I have of her.

I knew Elsie years ago through golf and enjoyed being with her a whole lot. She was a good golfer and good friend. She beat me in the first round of the U.S. Amateur at Myers Park in 1956..I have a clown painting she gave me in my home.
Please accept my deepest sympathy..
