James Shaw Obituary

James Henry Shaw "Jim", 99, Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, in his home of 70 years at 1 a.m., listening to 1 O'clock Jump by Count Bassie.

Born Sept 1, 1926, in Danville, Va., he was son of the late Henry and Charlotte Shaw. He was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Dorothy (Dot), and is survived by his children, Jean Sink (Winston Salem, N.C.), Wesley, Steve, and Ken, and his grandchildren, Justin, Carly, Dylan, Grant, James, Kyle, and Tommy.

Jim served proudly in the Army Air Corps in Trinidad as a radio operator. He retired from The C & P Telephone Co (AT&T). After retirement, he enjoyed his many hobbies, including musician, sailor, golfer, Ham radio operator (N4OGJ), bird watcher, card player, gardener, and time piddling in his shop. His happiest hours were spent at the Yankee Point Yacht Club and playing trumpet with the Richmond Concert Band and the Reflections Swing Band.

Jim loved his family unconditionally and was always there with a helping hand. That he is reunited with his wife, Dot, is the sole consolation for those he leaves behind. Jim was always first class, and all who knew him loved him.

Burial will be April 3, 2026, in the Mausoleum at Westhampton Memorial Park with Celebration of Life at The Cultural Arts Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Richmond Concert Band, PO Box 268, Richmond, Va., or the charity of your choice.
