We were given a tremendous opportunity to have Randy Sills in our midst. He imparted so much wisdom and shared his knowledge with many of the students, faculty and staff at Alexander Graham Middle School. His sudden departure from this life was unexpected, but he will be remembered for all the positive contributions he made to our community.

A message of condolence from former students, staff, and friends of Randy Sills. Alexander Graham Middle School, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dear Carol & Sills family,
On March 6th, 2019,Heaven received another angel, Randy Barron Sills "JC". A delightful and caring person to call "friend". Over the past few years I enjoyed sharing memories with Randy, especially Beach Music. If there ever was an Oscar given for knowing the title of artist of a beach song, it would go to Randy definitely!
Randy had a strong attribute of thoughtfulness towards others. As mentioned previously, Randy was part of the Bane's extended family.
May the Lord send the Holy Comforter to be with you!
Love & sending prayers up!

There are things that we don't want to happen but have to accept, things we don't want to know but have to learn, and people we can't live without but have to let go. Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the Sills family during this time of sorrow.

Coach Sills mailed me the scorebook for our AG basketball team's 1974 undefeated season with a note saying he thought I'd like to have this being I was the high scorer that season.

Coach Sills was big on us boxing out and rebounding. To teach us, he'd fix a metal contraption on the rim making it impossible for the ball to go in. He'd say, When the ball is shot, find a body to box out. Make yourself wide. Put your butt right into his gut. Keep your hands behind you so you know where he is. He showed us how. Watch the ball in the air so you'll know where it will come off the rim. When you make a rebound, you come down big and loud. He showed us how. When you make a rebound under your own basket, you don't just put the ball back up. You bring the ball down into almost a squatting position then explode up strong towards the basket. He showed us how.

Coach Sills taught us to go back door; take a charge; guard our boys when taking a charge; pass the ball; call out trailer; set picks; use a pick driving the defender into the pick and the biggie, Pick and Roll. To demonstrate the Pick and Roll, Coach Sills pretended to pick something from his nose then roll what he had pretended to pick from his nose.

One practice, Coach Sills had each player shoot 100 free throws.

For defense, Coach Sills told us, I want you to grab hold of that guy's jock strap, pull it towards you and I want you to step inside it. With his long grasshopper legs, Coach Sills showed us how we were to step inside the opponent's jock strap.

At the end of every practice, Coach Sills had us run rat races. For some reason after this practice, he had us run many more than usual. Standing at half court, Coach Sills sees us all at the baseline doubled over trying to breathe, not happy, can't feel our legs, don't want to hear his whistle to go again. Coach Sills, while in motion shooting the ball from half court says, If I make this you guys can go home. Swish and off he walks laughing that Coach Sills laugh through that Coach Sills mustache.

Dear Sills Family, I was so sorry to hear the news about Randy's passing. I met Randy back in the early 1960's when he was playing basketball with my older brother Bill Bane. I was only in fourth grade, but Randy became a house whole name in my family. He was always kind and caring and always enjoyed my mom and grandmothers company. My sister Beckie and Randy kept in touch throughout our adult lives and always asked how the four of us were and what we were up to . My comfort and prayers are with you all . On behalf of the Bane Family, Billy, Stan,Beckie and Yana , we loved Randy very much ❤
