Dr. William Best

1922 - 2017

William Robert Best, MD, age 94, of St. Charles passed away on March 20, 2017 at Presence Pine View Care Center. He was born July 14, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Stanley Gordon and Marian (Shapland) Best. Dr. Best married Ruth Johanna Stuchlik on Sept. 2, 1944. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Dr. Barbara (Dr. Robert) Mulch and Patricia (Dr. Kurt) Williams; four grandchildren: Matt Mulch of Denver, CO, Luke (Jennifer) Mulch of O'Fallon, IL, Rebecca Williams and Dr. Laura Williams both of Chicago, IL; two great-granddaughters: Lydia and Charlotte Mulch; and two brothers, George and Richard. Dr. Best was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Stanley and Howard. Dr. Best was an Army Veteran, graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and practicing hematologist. He had also previously served as Associate Dean and Chief of Staff of University of Illinois Hospital, Chief of Staff at Hines VA Hospital in Maywood, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Veterans' Affairs at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and Acting Chief of VA Cooperative Studies Program in Washington, DC. He had multiple articles published in the medical literature with special emphasis on statistics and computers in medicine. His hobbies included sailing, collecting artwork, and volunteering at the Art Institute of Chicago. There will be a Celebration of Life from 3:30 to 5:30 PM, Saturday, March 25 at River Glen, 975 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the University of Illinois College of Medicine or The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.
