Willie Sanders Obituary

Willie Edward Sanders, "Bill", 86, died peacefully February 21, 2017. He leaves behind his wife and best friend, Mary Ann (nee Griffin), siblings Wayne (the late Dorothy), Ann (the late Jim) Emmons, Dean (Sue), Donna (the late Jim) Butner, and many nieces and nephews. His parents Eddie and Helen (nee Hazlett) Sanders predecease him as do his brothers Don (Brenda) and Bob (the late Shirley, the late Joan) Sanders. Bill was the consummate teacher, always viewing his profession as a life work and not a "job". He began his professional career when he signed a contract to teach at East Peoria High School on the check-out counter of the local market he managed. After seven years in East Peoria, where he began their debate program, he was hired to be the debate coach at the soon-to-be-opened New Trier West High School in Northfield, IL. His love of teaching and his students was profound and the friendships that continued until his death with so many of those students attest to his devotion to his life's work. He was a thoughtful, reticent man who sensed so well the needs, strengths, and talents of his students and found ways to challenge and nurture at the same time. As one former student noted: "Bill Sanders passing will certainly leave an awful hole for all of us" but that he "touched the lives of so many so often and in such positive ways that the personal hole is compensated by the incredible contribution he has made to the lives of all of us." Celebration of his life Sat., March 25, 1-4pm, Michigan Shores Club, 911 Michigan Ave, Wilmette, IL. Donations in his honor may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Illinois, 773-281-5058 or www.cremation-society.com.

I'm so sad to hear of Mr. Sanders' passing.

I was in his advisory at New Trier West (NTW) and he did a great job of welcoming us to campus before school started in 1969.

I remember a parent conference meeting during which my father expressed disbelief/disappointment/disapproval that I didn't know what career path I wanted to pursue. Mr. Sanders responded that he (Mr. Sanders) still didn't know what he wanted to do so why should I.

He did a lot to guide us. For example, I remember him saying, "High school isn't just a bus stop on the way to college" meaning that we should make the most of our high school years and get involved in NTW clubs/activities as a way of discovering who we are.

For some reason, I always thought I'd see him again, but in all these years I never reached out to make it happen.

Peggy Bird

Bill contributed to the quality of life for the Jack Bird
family. Bill was a true friend to Jack and served on
a Humanities Team at New Trier as well as being a
social & professional colleague. Bill and Jack enjoyed
golf games together. Bill took an interest in the
Bird children as they matured and encouraged Peggy
in her zeal for feminism. Bill and MaryAnn have been
in touch with me after Jack's death. I am mourning
Bill's passing.

Mandy Pava

As his debate coach, Mr. Sanders had a profound influence on my brother Cal's life (NTW'70). Theirs was a relationship that I believe was maintained until Cal's death in 1992. "Bill" was someone for whom Cal maintained the utmost respect and appreciation.
Condolences on your huge loss,
Mandy Pava (NTW'69)
