James Gaffney Obituary
Dr. James Patrick Gaffney, 81, passed away May 5, 2017. Jim is survived by his loving wife Vicki (nee Lewis); his children Megan (Rob Painter), and Katie; grandchildren Henry and Rowan Painter, and niece Michelle. Jim is predeceased by his three brothers, Thomas, Bernard, and Francis. Dr. Gaffney was a professor of education in the master's program at Xavier University for 36 years. Jim also served for ten years on the board of directors of The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Norman Chapel at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45232, Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Catholic Foundation Diocese of Toledo, 1933 Spielbusch Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604, or the charity of one's choice. www.springgrove.org.

As a college friend of Kate's, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim on numerous occasions at our university, as well as afterward, visiting their family home in Ohio. Jim was always lovable, fun, smart, spirited, and kind. I could tell he had a large positive effect on Kate, and I was grateful for that (because Kate is one of my funniest, most interesting and intelligent friends). It was great knowing Jim when I could.

I had the honor and privilege of knowing Jim most of my life and working with him at Xavier for 25 years. Have fond memories of his smile, warmth and basketball acumen!
