Edgar Bridges Obituary

Mr. Edgar Bridges, Sr., 94, a native of Monticello, Mississippi died Monday, September 7, 2009, at Central Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS.
Mr. Bridges was the husband of the late Mrs. Willie Mae Newman Bridges.
He was a member of New Life Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, Monticello, MS.
As a Mason, he was an active member of the United Supreme Council, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Free Masonary, Southern Jurisdiction, where he served as Lieutenant Grand Commander and Sovereign Grand Commander, Past Grand Master/Grand Joshua of M. W. Stringer Grand Lodge and Heroines of Jericho. He served as Grand Lecturer for the 13th District; and an active member of the United Order of the Odd Fellows in America.
Citations include Emeritus Grand Master of M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge. He received the prestigious Medgar Evers Award for Outstanding Leadership from the Southern Region and The Labor and Industry Award from the NAACP for Outstanding Contributor to Head Start.
His survivors are five sons, Alvin Bridges, Carvin L. Bridges, Edgar (Luevennie) Bridges, Jr., Louis Bridges and Amos (Mattie) Bridges; six daughters, Emma Nell Magee, Golda (Jimmie) Franklin, Eleanor Brown, Carolyn (Archie) Ros, Willie Ann Payton, and Betty (Hiram); three brothers, Lawrence (Dorthalia) Sutton, William Sutton, and Ardell Sutton; 39 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009, at M. W. Stringer Grand Lodge, 1072 John Lynch Street, Jackson, MS at 12 noon. Visitation will be today at Johnson Funeral Home, 1-8 pm. Wake services will be Friday, September 18, 2009, at M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge at 7 pm. Interment will be in the Pearl River Valley Church cemetery, Monticello, MS.
Johnson Funeral Home, Prentiss, MS is in charge of arrangements.

My name is Nicholas Bridges, son of the late Thad S. Bridges, Sr., who was the son of the late Edgar Bridges, Sr. On behalf of Thad S. Bridges, Sr.'s family(Betty, Thad Jr., Nicholas, Candice, Michael, Darius, Jamerica,Nikirah, Thad III, Cameron, Tyra, DeLacy, and Tara), I would like to say that Papa(Edgar Sr.) was a great inspiration to us all. It brings me great joy to say that Papa not only had personal relationships with his children, but he also had great relationships with each and everyone of his grandchildren! Grand Master Bridges was a class act. He was such an inspirational role model. His humble, Christian life is a shining example for anyone who knew him. He never boasted of his impressive titles which gained him national prominence. He quitely went about his work of trying to make the world a better place in a very down home style.
