Betty Emerson Obituary
Betty attended Sherman Indian School in Riverside, Calif. and graduated from Inglewood Unified High School. In June of 1954 she married her husband, Albert, in Riverside, Calif. They resided in California through 1972, after which they moved back to New Mexico where she raised her children. Betty was a talented seamstress and at cross stitching her native designs on pillows. She was a renowned folk artist known for her Navajo mud toys.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert Emerson; grandson, Christopher Light; parents, Clyde and Lydia Begay; brothers, Harry and Ted Begay; sister, Irene Bekis Begay; and nieces, Bonita Tsosie and D'Anna Begay. She is survived by her brothers, Howard, Leonard and Lee Tom Begay; one sister, Rose Shorty; daughter, Lucinda Emerson; sons and daughters-in-law; Anthony (Michele) Emerson and Travis (Debra) Emerson; grandchildren, Kimberly (Lorne) Nelson, Zachary, Cheyanne, Danielle, Truman, Taylor and Sarah Emerson; great-grandson, Gabriel Nelson, and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family.
A viewing for Betty will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 at Desert View Funeral Home, North U.S. Highway 491 in Shiprock. Interment will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Kirtland/Fruitland Cemetery, 59 Road 6575 in Kirtland. There will be no viewing at graveside. A memorial service for Betty will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Kirtland Baptist Church, 17 Road 6500 in Kirtland followed by a potluck reception at the church fellowship hall.
Betty is in the care of Desert View Funeral Home, North U.S. Highway 491 in Shiprock, 505-368-4607.

I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. As a public health nurse I used to see her parents and worked with Irene for many years.

I met Betty at afoul acorn era Dialysis. We would exchange stories. She was interested in ceramics and ask me what new thing I made. I will miss our little talks and laughs.
