A discussion came up recently about my favorite art teachers during my teenage years and I remembered Mr. Kreiswirth´s art class at WHS (c1997)...He shaped my love for all things art! He was that ONE teacher who told me to pursue art as a career and I´m glad he was there for that encouragement. I am forever grateful and glad we crossed paths when we did. I know I´m late for this but RIP to a very influential teacher.

Gabe, the most influential teacher I have had at West. Matriculated there during the late 80's. Let me used his fancy oil painting and supplies. Empowered to work alone in the backroom just enjoying myself with art creation and be immerse in it. Full of encouragement. Full of wisdom and joy. Love the prospector look. Love all the 50's car - California vibe. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you have done for me.

Going on an interview today to teach art classes. Got me thinking of Gabe Kreiswirth. He was my mentor for many years. Although I have taken many classes over the last few decades, I learned more in Mr. Kreiswirth's class than in any college or university. I still have some of the work I created back then. I model my classes after Gabe's teaching. I had him for 4 years at West High and used to show up at his life drawing classes at ECC.

It has been really hard for me to accept Gabe's passing. He was such an amazing man. He wasn't just a brilliant artist he was a man that loved his work and his students and his family. I owe him so much. I was a student and a babysitter for his great kids. He saw things in me I wasn't allowed to see in myself. He changed my life in so many positive ways. I know he did that for so many others as well. The world is an sadder place without him, but in so many ways what he gave us continues to make the world a better place. Michelle Benton

Mr. Kreiswirth was one of the few teachers that I felt understood me, during the turbulent teenage years. He encouraged me to pursue a future in art. Fortunately, that inspiration led me to earn a college degree. Today, I don't do much in the form of artwork, but Mr. Kreiswirth's legacy is still a strong part of me. He will be missed.

I was a crazy kid, emphasis on the crazy. Gabe taught me to direct that, to work at it, and moreover, stop whining. I'm not entirely certain I wouldn't have been institutionalised in some way if he hadn't convinced me that there was work to be done, and it wouldn't happen unless I applied myself seriously to it. What sort of person could get that kind of a message through to a spinning-out sixteen year old? One who paid attention, who understood, who spoke directly to you instead of two inches above your head. I've been measuring people's quality against Gabe ever since. Vale, Mr. Kreiswirth, you did good.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Kreiswirths passing. I call him that because he was my Highschool art teacher. I loved him very much and think of him daily. I remember I was working at a Salon in Torrance and I recognized Sandras name I asked her how Gabe was and she called him up for me. He came over to see me and we attended an art show that my boss at the time was giving. We went around and looked at and analyzed every painting there. We were friends and I will continue to cherish the memories and also to create art of all types in his memory.

A bit late, but just learned of this. I was a student of Gabe's at West High School. To say he changed my life is an understatement. For this confused and rebellious girl, he was the only adult that made sense. I will be forever thankful that he was my teacher. He had the gift of making each class interesting and eventful. He inspired so many. Condolences to his family & may he rest in peace

Just found out about Mr. Kreiswirth's passing and had to say something. I was a student of his for about 3 years and he had a very positive impact on me at a time when I really needed it. He had a big heart but wasn't going to hand you a medal just for showing up, you had to earn it and then earn it again, and again. His humor was amazingly sardonic and sharp. He wore amazing clothing! Most days it was wool baggies with suspenders, cuff links and ties which he had painted pin-ups on. He occasionally had “don't bother the teacher” days where he sat in a lazy-boy style chair and had coffee while we did our work in silence. These days did not bother us, he gave so much on regular days that it made sense that he had to stop and recharge. He had a record player and allowed us bring our records in but he frequently played his own. He would spin Zappa, the Germs, X and Weather Report for us. This was the first time I had heard anything like these bands and it was great. I suppose I could go on because I have a load of excellent memories from that time but I'll leave it here. He was an uncommon man and I'm very thankful that I stumbled into his classroom. Thanks for everything, Mr. K. I'm still making records and painting and it's all your fault! Class of '84.

I missed this lovely obituary in the Daily Breeze. I was so fortunate to meet Mr. K in 1977 and work with him my last two years of high school. I was, once again, fortunate to meet up with him in 2012 and he, again, agreed to work with me in his garage. We spent almost 2 years painting together until he became ill. Words cannot express how much I appreciated all that he gave to me; the 3 hour discussions about art, politics, life in general, the direction for my painting and the complete silence when we both forgot the other was there working. I think of him every Friday as that was our day to paint. I only hope that I gave to him as much as he gave to me. I send his family my heartfelt prayers.

Mr. Kreiswirth was my favorite teacher of all time. I went into his class thinking my art was mediocre, but his daily encouragements including, "Magnificent! A+++! Best piece I've seen all semester!" got me thinking otherwise. Whether he meant it or not, he helped me become confident in my work and life. Over ten years have gone by since being in his class, but I still make art on canvas and in life to this day using all his techniques.

Reading these loving remembrances of Gabe from his students and friends is a great comfort to his family. We knew he meant a lot to those with whom he interacted, but these expressions have been special in myriad ways. But then again, so was Gabe. Thank you, everyone.

He was such an inspiring teacher to all of his students, and so positive and encouraging. I have saved a lot of my art projects from his class because he made me feel important and talented. I remember him being so proud when he found out that I became a teacher with TUSD. What a great man and inspiring teacher! Rest in peace, you will always be remembered as a legend!

Yesterday I learned that my Art teacher Mr. Kreiswirth of 4 years in high school (West Torrance High School in CA) has passed away. I know he would hate for me to post something on the internet (not around back then) as it would go against all that he was. He brought out the best in me and my art while at the same time teaching me to think differently, against the grain. I felt he was the first that introduced me to fighting the system, that even though the system was rigid and promoted a limited way of thinking, he pushed us to push back. He taught us about jazz, architecture and many other things besides art (drawing, painting, etc.). This guy was a legend in every sense of the word. He taught for 40 years at West West Torrance High School and he came everyday in his staple pleated 40's slacks, suspenders, white shirt and WIDE 40's tie, had a fantastic mustache and of course his bald head. He had a wit like no other, he was hilarious but also would not take any crap! I know this man was a inspiration to us all for not just art. I know Chris Roberts and Christopher Garske know what I am talking about as we had our last 2 years together in our own studio with him. He was a true teacher and mentor dedicated to the students and to his craft. He was a legend, pioneer and a rebel! I have not seen him in over 15 years now as I use to visit him at least once a year after leaving high school. Although I would run into him around his home in Hermosa Beach from time to time. I regret not keeping that relationship up. He was really the only teacher who pushed me, who believed in me and my art, believed that I could make a difference in this world and not conform. Rest in Peace Gabe! You live on in all the students you taught! Gabriel Nathan Kreiswirth 1935-2014.

Gabe was a teacher, mentor, hero, shrink and friend to me for 43 years. I'm in debt for to him for giving the gift of a deeper interest in art, comics, Be Bop Jazz and architecture. Because of him I became an art teacher myself. When I was starting out in teaching and got stuck, I asked myself "What would Gabe do?" He was a funny storyteller, a great writer, talented musician, and course exceptional and unique painter. He also was a supportive, empathetic soul who is treasured by my family, as three of us took his instruction.

Gabe was a bright light in our life. He was intelligent, gifted, and compassionate. For several years he provided assistance to my parents with kindness and patience and for that I will be eternally grateful. I always enjoyed our discussions over the strongest, darkest coffee that we could possibly brew. To his family, please know that my family extends their deepest sympathy and know that he is forever in our hearts and minds.

It was you Mr. Kreiswirth that told me I was an artist, to believe in myself and my talents. I did not learn like everyone else and I only excelled in the things that were in my heart. You let me know that was ok. Thank you for your caring words and heart. They have stuck with me not just through my career as an artist but in the living of life. Until we meet again, rest in peace, love and light.

I was a student of Gabe's in high school (art department) from 1972 to 1976. He encouraged me to go to college to continue my art. Before that I never considered going to college at all. I thought I wasn't smart enough. But with his encouragement I went, starting with art classes and then exploring other subjects as well. I found I was smart enough (gpa around 3.8) and a whole new world opened up for me; all thanks to Mr. Kreisworth. I am still a student of art and I think of him often in gratitude for caring about a shy, insecure, struggling teenager. My condolences to his family. May he rest and peace and may his spirit continue to shine through those he left behind. Namaste.

Rest in peace Mr. Kreiswirth. You, like my first teacher Mrs. Cai, showed me that even if we are trapped in a system that might be rigid, failing, dysfunctional or disorganized, we can still reach out and genuinely care for each other...beyond our job titles and as human beings. Beyond that, you were a pure genius in the way you approached teaching fine arts to advanced students in their late teens. From the pool of beginning class students, you hand selected us, the advanced students, and convinced even the most cynical Asian students (we were heavily discouraged by our parents to pursue studies that risk financial success) to take your advanced art classes. Then, you, in many ways, stopped teaching us...but worked to no end to facilitate our exploration of various media and techniques to realize our ideas. When the school schedule is over for the day, you were setting up the classroom for the next project, you allowed students who worked on more complicated pieces or needed extra time to use the studio, dumpster dived/solicited donations for art materials that even a well-resourced high school could not budget for. I have made some of my best pieces of art in your class and two of which helped me to skip beginning and intermediate figure drawing at UC Berkeley. Thank you for allowing me, when my parents disallowed me, to understand and do art.

I'm a former West High alumni, and although I was never a student of Mr. Kreiswirth's - I always knew he was a cool and special teacher at West. I have read so many comments from former students, and if only I could go back in time. Art was my true passion, I just did not realize it until I got a little older. I could kick myself for not taking your class now... To the Kreiswirth Family, my heartfelt condolences~

Gabe, I thoroughly enjoyed your Art classes, as one of the first students of yours, at WHS. Many of your artistic techniques, stayed with me, through these 45+ years, after graduating in 1969! Most of my creations, over the years, were for my 3 sons, along with other opportunities to use my artistic abilities, come to life, using your teachings. May your Soul rest in peace. Your talents will live on in those you have left behind.

Dear Mr. Kreiswirth,
I was a former student in your Art class at West High School. I liked it so much I took art every year for all four years in school. Your class was like a refuge for me. You treated me as if I mattered and you valued my opinions as well. I also took your life drawing class at West High and you had used the students as models. For the first time in my life I could see how others saw me. And that I was beautiful and not the ugly girl I thought I was. I remember you would only let us listen to Steely Dan records while we did our art projects. To this day, I am a Steely Dan fan and still listen to their music. I remember that you reminded me of George Carlin the comedian. And you said that it was a compliment. Also, you loved your children. And although I have never met your children, I feel I know them because you spoke about them often and they were always your first concern. I guess, you can say that I learned a lot of good qualities and examples from you.
Sincerely,
Lisa Correa (used to be Jacobs)
