Robert Greenwald Obituary

Robert "Bob' Gordon Greenwald passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 8, 2021 at his home in Longmont. In recent months, his health had been declining because of COPD. He was a beloved son, husband, father, stepfather, brother, uncle, and friend. To all who knew him, he was a "bear" of a man with a distinctive basso voice, an infectious laugh, and an always kind heart. He lived his life with integrity, purpose, and loyalty. To those who loved him, we will forever keep a special place in our hearts and our warm memories. Bob was born in Denver on June 9, 1937, to Gordon and Mary Maher Greenwald. He was the only son in a family of three girls. Raised in Denver, he graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1955. He attended ASU (Arizona State University) where he completed his B.S. and most of his Masters work in Business Administration. Bob then was hired by NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) in 1963, rose to become Director of Contracts and Risk Management, and retired in 1995 after a 32-year career earning many awards and achievements. Post retirement, he worked for a custom home contractor and for UNAVCO, Inc. again doing contract work for an agency doing international earthquake research. Bob and Susan Turner met in 1995 at a Boulder Singles Ski Club party and were married February 12, 2000 in Boulder. In 1999, they sold their individual residences in Boulder and moved to a small acreage northwest of Longmont. There they became "gentleman" farmers, growing alfalfa between working and travelling. They also cemented their family with their dogs, who loved the countryside and the many adventures it afforded them. Bob and Susan spent much of their free time in Salida at the Turner vacation home where Bob could fish the Arkansas River and where they made life-long friends. They travelled extensively throughout Colorado, exploring western history and Colorado's beauty. They also travelled to the annual reunions of the USS Gambier Bay on which Jack Turner (Susan's dad) had served during WWII and Susan served on its Board of Governors. They travelled internationally as well, to Austria, Mexico, and Italy. Bob's hobbies included hunting with well-trained dogs and not-so-well-trained friends, golfing in several leagues, Ducks Unlimited, fly-fishing, exploring Colorado history, and enjoying nature found in the great outdoors. He loved living in the country with daily views of Long's Peak and Mt. Meeker, being at home with Susan, and having his ritual breakfast at McDonald's every morning. As his illness progressed, we continued to go to breakfast at McD's and his evening meal was topped with a brownie sundae, replete with chocolate syrup and often whipped-cream. Bob is survived by his wife/partner Susan Turner and their dog Chloe; Susan's two children, Carissa Horowitz and Andrew Perry (Sandy) and daughters Alexandra and Savannah: his son, Christopher Greenwald (Leslie) and grandchildren Bryce and Maddison; his two stepsons, Derek Sanders (Chayo) and their children and Justin Sanders (Judy); his stepdaughter, Debbie Stevens (John) and their children and grandchildren; his sisters, Marilyn Sena, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Carol Ann Greenwald, M.D., and Cathi Hathaway (Jack) and their children and grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Christopher Sanders; his previous wives Janice Retallack Sedalmick Greenwald and Camile Yakes Sanders Greenwald; and his many beloved dogs. Because of the pandemic, services will be held at a later date. Please visit howemortuary.com to share personal memories and condolences and to receive updates on future arrangements. Sending thoughts and prayers to you Susan. I'm so sorry we haven't seen you for so long. Every time we drive out in your area we think about you and say we need to call. Wish we would of gotten that done and that we would of gotten together more. Life is going by to fast. We loved and appreciated all Bob did for us, always there when we needed him. He will be missed.
