MARGARET D. HASSETT

Mrs. Margaret D. Hassett, 82, of West St., Riverside, died Wed., August 3, 2011, after a short stay at Wesley Nursing Home. A native and lifelong Mechanicville resident, born March 2, 1929, daughter of the late Ernest and Gertrude Hofacker Dunbar, and wife of the late Robert Hassett, who predeceased her in 1977. She was also predeceased by a brother, Bernard Dunbar. Margaret worked for the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. in Mechanicville for a number of years until the mill closed in 1971. She was an accomplished artist after taking courses with well known artists like Wayne Morrell, Louis Pelkey and Helen VanWyck in Rockport, MA, where she loved spending her summer vacation every year. She had her studio and gallery called Blue Orchid Gallery in her home where she enjoyed teaching classes for children and adults for many years. She displayed her art work in many places in Saratoga and had several one-woman shows around the area. She and her husband enjoyed Western square dancing, joining the Helderberg Twirlers Club in Scotia and made many lifelong friends in the Capital District. She was also involved with the Colonie and Saratoga Art Associations. Survivors include her stepson, Robert A. Hassett Jr. of Arizona. Also survived by her brother, Richard Dunbar and sister, Grace (Dunbar) Fiorino of Mechanicville, along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main Street, Mechanicville. Burial in Hudson View Cemetery. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, on Tuesday, prior to the service, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Remembrances may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Margaret D. Hassett.
