Laura Mann Niskayuna - Laura Mann, who hit 100 and kept on running, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 28.
She was born to Harry and Bertha Novick in Brooklyn, NY on March 1, 1924, thus missing being a leap year baby by one day. She was the middle sister to Martha and Elaine.
Upon graduation from high school, Laura, known to her family as Libby, Mom, Grandma, or The Great One, worked as a bookkeeper for various firms in Manhattan. In 1951, she married Joseph G. Mann and together they brought forth daughters Harriet and Marian. During her years as a Queens and then a Long Island homemaker, she brought in spending money by her accomplished knitting. So you might have seen one or two of her sweaters on the streets of New York on a chilly day.
She was predeceased by her parents, by her beloved Joseph in 1986, and her sisters Martha and Elaine.
Shortly after Joseph's passing and until last year, Laura maintained an apartment in Niskayuna close to her daughter, Harriet, and her family. Besides her knitting work, she volunteered at the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by her daughter Harriet (Jim) Fogarty of Niskayuna, daughter Marian (Kevin) Hamburger, of Tarzana, CA., grandchildren Michael (Alisha) Fogarty -- her 60th birthday present, Rebecca (Jaime) Arevalo, Jacqueline (Matthew) Koh, Jenna (Ian) Rapport, and Allison Hamburger (Brian Breitsch) as well as several nieces and nephews. She would be quick to tell you that there are also eleven great - grandchildren starting with Lydia, then Joseph, Clare, Robert, Gabriella, Isaac, Jaime, Evangeline, Elliott, Cameron, and ending with Martin. They will long remember baking gingerbread cookies with "The Great One."
For these 10 decades, Laura kept a sharp mind. Her apartment was well stocked with books, jigsaw puzzles, and crossword puzzles from the NY Times (with pen). And she was fond of telling stories of long ago even if you might have heard them before. No matter, you were going to hear them again -- in case you forgot!
On March 1, 2024, the staff of Brookdale Senior Living helped Laura and her family and friends celebrate her 100th birthday. Her family thanks the Brookdale staff once again and the wonderful staff at Kingsway Arms for caring for Laura in her last year.
Funeral services will be private.
