David French Fullam

David French Fullam West Newbury, MA David French Fullam, of West Newbury, MA, renowned artist represented by Clark Gallery in Lincoln, MA, died November 1, 2014 after a long illness. Fullam liked to quote Emily Dickinson, who wrote: Art is a house that tries to be haunted. The artist added, To me it cannot be other. As well as teaching Drawing and Painting at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, NH for 22 years, he exhibited extensively throughout his career. This culminated in a 30-year retrospective of his works on canvas and paper entitled The Urban Experience to the Natural World: Three Decades of Painting and Drawing Landscapes (1979-2012) at the NH Institute of Art, in October 2012. Clark Gallery solo exhibitions included David Fullam: New Work in 2011 and Land Marks in 2007. He was represented by Clark Gallery for 30 years. His work is in the permanent collection of the DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA. An extensive collection of works, including commissions, are held by Fidelity Investments and Wellington Management of Boston, MA, as well as Brown, Rudnick, Freed & Gesmer, Attorneys, Boston. Of his own work, Fullam once said: You can't just stroll into my landscapes you must find your way. It's important to note what's at your feet before proceeding. Born in Princeton, NJ, July 27, 1945, Fullam was the son of the late Ernest F. and Barbara D. (Jewell) Fullam of Schenectady, NY. He graduated with honors and a bachelor of fine arts degree from Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, MO in 1969, going on to receive his master of fine arts degree from the Syracuse University School of Fine Arts in 1972. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan L. Nash of West Newbury; his two brothers, Timothy Fullam and Peter Fullam and wife, Dianne; his nephew, Richard Fullam and wife, Jennifer; his niece, Suzanne Fullam; and grandniece, Kaitlyn Armer and two grandnephews, Steven Fullam and Colby Monaco. A retrospective of the artist's life and work will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
