DANIEL CREWS Obituary

Daniel Patrick Crews, 37, passed away peacefully in his Antioch home on March 21, 2021, surrounded by his family. Born July 20, 1983, in Waukegan, Illinois, he was a precarious little bugger with an impish smile. On October 26, 1986, he survived a terrible car accident and suffered a C2-C3 spinal cord injury that changed his life and the lives of many. Hereafter, the next second, minute, hour, day, month, and the next 34 years, he fought life as a quadriplegic dependent on a ventilator. He brought new meaning to the words hope, courage, inspiration, stubbornness, love, and tenacity through his struggles. He graduated with High Honors from Antioch High School in 2001 and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of Lake County, where he studied Political Science and Criminal Justice. He was a closet-loving Chicago Cubs, Bulls, and Illinois Basketball fan who knew the teams, scores, averages, and records but denied watching them. He had a never-ending love-hate relationship with sports, from his beloved Denver Broncos and his favorite player John Elway to his most hated GM, John Elway. He never forgave Elway for trading his favorite athlete/person of "All Time" - Tim Tebow. Special thanks to the staff of Froedtert Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House - Milwaukee, Chicago Rehabilitation Center, Condell Wound Care Center, Consumers Credit Union for his Walk-a-thon, Star Hospice, the many nurses, doctors, caregivers, friends, and special people who loved and cared for our "Bugs." Daniel will continue to live on through his family, who loved and cared for him dearly. The loss of our son, brother, and friend will remain forever, but comfort comes knowing he is at peace. Daniel is survived by his mom, Cheryl Crews (nee Cunningham); dad, Gerald (Kathleen) Crews, and siblings, Kevin, Brandon, and Kelsey; and his devoted friend, Frank Zera. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Ruth and Donald Cunningham and Beryl (nee Bowland) Crews. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a funeral service to commence at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Strang Funeral Home, 1055 Main St. Antioch, IL 60002. For additional information, call 847-395-4000. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tim Tebow Foundation at https://www.timtebowfoundation.org/about or Ronald McDonald House Charities, Eastern Wisconsin at https://rmhc-easternwi.org/. Dan has always been an inspiration. He never gave up on life and continued his life despite his odds. It was a pleasure to have known Dan. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Dan's family.

After reading this tribute to Daniel, I feel very moved by this extraordinary man. His struggle was severe and his accomplishments were many. I did not know him nor do I know any of his family. Reading this has lifted my spirit knowing what can be accomplished when faced with disability. To his family, you must feel so proud of him. I’m sure your struggles were many also. He is where he is suppose to be. God called him home and it was his time. May peace be with you.
