Edward Lis Obituary

Edward V. Lis of Gulph Mills Artist, Edward V. Lis of Gulph Mills, died peacefully Thursday, December 29, 2011, at his home. Born in Tartakow, Poland in 1915, Lis began his art career in 1939 when, as an officer in the Polish Army, he was captured by the Germans and placed in a prisoner-of-war camp in Murnau, Germany. While imprisoned he honed his artistic skills and in 1945 was liberated by American forces. Lis joined the Polish Second Corps in Italy where he remained until his outfit was sent to England and finally demobilized. While in England he continued to study art at the University at Leicester and at the Sir John Cass Art School-London University where his flair for portraiture manifested itself. He arrived in the United States in 1951 and achieved U.S. citizenship in 1956. In addition to the many portraits painted of well known British and European personalities, Lis painted numerous prominent individuals of this country including commissions of presidents of The Union League of Philadelphia, Merrimack College and Villanova University. Other portraits by Lis include those of John Cardinal Krol, Polish President in Exile August Zaleski, Princess Lubomirska and other noted professionals and family members throughout the United States. He has had over 40 one man exhibitions; numerous group exhibitions and was also known as a landscape painter. He spent many summers painting seascapes on Monhegan Island, Maine. In addition to his passion for gardening, he was a glider pilot and life long enthusiast of airplanes. Edward was predeceased by his loving wife Marjorie van Roden Lis. He is survived by his son, Edward (Ted) Lis, Jr., daughter-in-law Connie Joy, grandsons Joshua and Ethan of Schwenksville and his daughter, Elizabeth (Libby) Lis Seybert and son-in-law, James Seybert of Chester Springs. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 6, in Sacred Heart Church, 120 Jefferson Street (Swedesburg), Bridgeport, PA 19405. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. The burial in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens is private for family. In the 1970´s l was privileged to study art under Edward Lis and we became good friends having coffee together at McDonald´s in West Chester before the all day Tuesday Class at the W. Chester Art Center. He was talented but also good instructor, and he was gracious and patient. RIP to a very fine Christian gentleman and artist.

Dear Ted and family, I am sorry for the loss of a dear father and grandfather. Had I seen this notice a day earlier I would have been at the service. May God grant you comfort and hope in the Lord Jesus (I Thess. 4.13-14). Please get in touch with me at the Armenian Martyrs' Church in Havertown.

Ted & Libby,
I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. When Libby and I were at Villanova Mr. Lis painted me a picture that I have kept to this day. For some reason I came across it 2 weeks ago and just had it reframed and hung yesterday. He was a wonderful and generous man and instilled those virtues in you both. My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to both you and your families.

Dear Libby, Ted, and your families,
Words can never assuage the loss you must feel at this time. Your dear father has joined your dear mother in eternal rest with our Creator, and we can only imagine the reunion they are having with family and friends, our parents included. We always enjoyed your father's wry humor, but especially the gift of his art. He brought joy to so many through the special talents God gave him, which he shared with us. His influence was magnificent. As I sit in my office penning this note, I am gazing at one of my mother's landscapes that your father inspired. Thankfully, his spirit will always be remembered by those who loved him and had the opportunity to share a part of his life. You and your dear families are close to us in prayer despite our physical separation. Most sincerely,

I remember viewing Ed's artwork with him at a show. He had time to discuss all with me in detail. A fine man. Quite a story to tell of his life. Quite a life he lived!

Libby and family,

May you be content in knowing that your father is at rest and in a better, more beautiful place with a color palette to exceed all others that only a most talented artist as your father would understand and appreciate. Please accept my deepest sympathy. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Janice
