Kathryn Sage Obituary

Kathryn "Kat" H. Sage, of St. Augustine, Florida, formerly of Yorktown, Virginia, passed away on May 23, 2016, at the Bailey Center for Caring surrounded by her family. The family is grateful to Rev. Ted Voorhees, Vicar of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, for administering Last Rites at the very end.
After her early school years in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Kathryn moved to Richmond, Va., to attend Richmond Professional Institute where she met her future husband, George Sage. After George's graduation from the University of Richmond and George's commissioning as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, Kat and George were married in St. Timothy's Church in Winston-Salem on May 14, 1955. They then headed to Washington, D.C., where George began his active Naval service. In addition to stateside service, they lived in the Azores Islands, Portugal, where Kat studied art and painting under Senior Diaz. Later, she accompanied her husband, now a U.S. Navy Commander, to Brussels, Belgium, when he was assigned to NATO Headquarters, which often required travel to the capitals of the nations in the Alliance. After 20 years in the Navy, George and Kat retired to Leesburg, Va., where Kat became a real estate agent with Winslow Williams and Associates. Having been an antique buff for years, Kat went on to open her own shop in the Leesburg Antique Center.
Kat and George then moved to Yorktown and resided there for 25 years where they were active members of Grace Episcopal Church, which was just across the street from their home. It was there that Kat became a "Daughter of the King." Kat also operated Yorktown Shoppe there for 25 years, the last 9 years in association with George and Linda Bennett.
Kat loved the ocean, so she and George bought a beach house in Southern Shores on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
After leaving Yorktown in 2009, Kat and George moved to the Chamberlin at Ft. Monroe, Va. They subsequently moved into the vacated Army quarters across from the Engineers Pier. While at Ft. Monroe, the Sages were involved with the Chapel of the Centurion when it was disestablished as an Army Chapel and became a civilian house of worship.
Kat was predeceased by her mother and father, Benjamin and Pauline Hankin, and her sister Mary. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, George; children Kathryn L. Sage and her husband Kenny Bone, Laurie Sage Royal and her husband Tony, and Timothy G. Sage and Evie; grandchildren Michael David and Kristin Lynn.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church in St. Augustine at 3 p.m. Tuesday June 7, 2016, and at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown at a time and date to be announced.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, your local hospice or to the charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Flagler Hospital and especially to Community Hospice for their compassionate end of life care.

With sorrowful hearts remembering our sweet friend Kat Sage, best friend & loving wife of husband George. Both her & George welcomed me to the Yorktown Shoppe as a new employee & then my daughter as well. Our families became close friends. during those Y Shoppe years, & many after. It was a delite to listen to antidotes of her family & adventures overseas with George, and even how they acquired many an antique find in
the shoppe. To a woman of great faith,
We will miss you dearly Kat.
Love, Susie, Rick, & Brigetta Thornton
