Abraham Firestone Obituary

HAMPTON - Abraham Joseph Zeeland Firestone, one of the last of the Greatest Generation, passed on 04/09/2016. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, "the love of my life," Ernestine, four children; Carol Ann "Tess" Firestone, Steven Firestone (Debbie), Claudia Firestone Stiebel (Bill), and William Firestone. Five grandchildren; Stefanie Fischel, Jared Fischel, Matt Fischel (Edith), Sam Stiebel (Emily), Sally Ein (Mark), four great grandchildren, and his brother, Irwin Firestone. A first generation American, Abe landed at Ellis Island at the age of 1 day. He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. After joining the Army Air Corp, Abe came to Newport News as a flight officer, assigned to Langley AFB, in preparation for duty in England during WWII While assigned to Langley Field, during the Jewish Holidays, William Morgenstern, the father of Ernestine Morgenstern (Firestone), invited the young officer to come to Rodef Sholom Temple to participate in holiday services. Here, he met his future bride, Ernestine. At the end of the war, Abe returned to Newport News, where he married Ernestine and started Firestone Insurance Services and Cardinal Premium Finance Companies, operating these businesses until he retired in 1994. The success of these ventures allowed Abe to tirelessly give time and financial support to worthy causes, and give generously to friends, those in need, and the greater community. Abe was a World War Two hero, recipient of multiple medals, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses (B-17 Bomber, 34th Bomb Group, Lead Pathfinder aircraft), husband, father, mentor, benefactor and successful businessman. Abe was a man who supported and was deeply committed to his family, his religion (Rodef Shalom Temple), America, and community enriching organizations like Rotary, where he was an active member for over 25 years. To all who knew him, Abe was a man of honor and integrity; his word was his bond. Abe was a man who knew no strangers, always quick with a pun, kind, gentle, and quietly generous to all. He always responded to the regular greeting, "How's it going?" with "I feel like a million dollars...all green and wrinkled." And, he never liked German hot dogs... "they're the wurst. " To all of the people who have joined the Firestone Family in saying goodbye to this truly Quality man, thank you. To the myriad of friends who supported him in his later years, as his health began to falter, we are grateful more than mere words can express. A man's immortality rests through and in the minds and memories of all who survive him. He will truly be missed. Service will be at Rodef Sholom Temple on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with the burial to follow in the Jewish Cemetery of Virginia Peninsula. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rodef Sholom Temple, 318 Whealton Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666 or a charity of your choice in Abe's memory. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News.

I had the honor of being Abe´s physician inNewport News until I moved to Atlanta in 2008. I just found a book he gave me with a copy of his mission list for his bomber inWW2. He was a very kind, engaging , and inspiring man. He lived a full life ; my condolences to his family.

When I moved into Abe's neighborhood, across the circle, being a single woman, the general welcome wasn't that warm. Abe and Ernie, along with Bill and Ruth plus Betty were very supportive. All of them along with Ray and the Hinnants that lived next door, came to my house warming and even if it was curiosity they all gave us a feeling of well being. To say the least we all became great friends and with some we felt like family, especially Abe, Ernie, Bill, Ruth and Betty. We are having a very difficult time with Abe's passing and it will be the same with the others after 20 plus years of extreme friendship. All our Love and condolences to you Ernestine we shall love you and Abe forever. Sincerely Paula and Harry.

I will always remember Mr. Firestone. He gave me my first job at Firestone Insurance as a high school senior. He was an example of a great employer. We had great times in and out of the office. My prayers to Mrs. Firestone and the family.

Abe Firestone was a wonderful and kind man. He hired me when I was in High School and trained me to work in the insurance industry, after graduation I was hired full time at his business Firestone Insurance Services. From then on he trained me to know everything about the insurance business. I truly enjoyed working for him many years and then he attend my wedding. I will never forget how he got me started in the insurance industry. You will be truly missed by your family and friends.

Ernie and family, I am so sorry to learn of Abe's passing. I have many fond memories of him from throughout the years--he always had something to say that made me laugh. He was a kind-hearted, wonderful man. I wish that my parents and I could have been there for Abe's funeral, but I had to be in Phoenix yesterday and today for work. I hope to bring my parents to visit you soon. Much love and hugs from me, Bob, Ben and Eli.

To Ernestein and family, your father was a gentleman and when I married Stanley Adelson he and you welcomed me. He always reminded me of my own father. My sincerest sympathies to you all. Wanda Dunn.

Dear Steve, Bill, and the entire Firestone family. I had the immense pleasure of meeting Abe in England, along with my father-in-law, Angelo Grinaldo, during a reunion trip to Mendlesham. As I recall he said he was a radio operator and, as all the vets said, "I was only doing my job." That was the theme among those great guys. It is often said that our country has no heroes. How wrong they are. For, they are merely looking in all the wrong places. During my trip I only had to look across the table at Abe. A real hero in my eyes.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Mr. Firestone. He was a fantastic individual who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Mr. Firestone gave me my first full-time job after college. He was a great supporter of my dreams and visions. Mr. Firestone knew I was destined for great things before I even realized it. He always commented about how proud he was of my accomplishments and hard work. I always felt special just knowing that he and Mrs. Firestone cared enough to keep in touch over the years. He was a great person of integrity and values. Mr. Firestone was one of my greatest mentors in life and I will truly miss him. His concern and encouragement for my success carried me through many challenging times.

A good heart has stopped beating and his soul has ascended. There is a great emptiness left by Mr. Firestone's passing, but I am certain that the strength of love that you and your family share for each other will get you through this difficult time. May that love honor his memory and may you always cherish the time you had together.

I will be eternally grateful for the knowledge he shared with me, and his part in contributing to the individual I have become today. He will never be forgotten!
