When I moved to Yorktown in Jan. 1949 I attended Poquoson High School (PHS) and over the years I had Thelma Hansford as my teacher. She was a wonderful teacher, she keep your attention and interest and although I passed Latin, really not sure of its benefit. Thelma Hansford made going to PHS a real pleasure and rewarding for me. I am having our 60 yr. class (1953) reunion on June 22,2013 at my place and now sorry that Mrs. Hansford will not be with us this time John McPherson

Mrs. Hansford was my Latin teacher for 3 years. I don't remember much Latin but I remember Mrs. Hansford's love of history and her enthusiasm and delight in writing York County's history. I am so grateful she cared enough about the County to not only record its history but also teach it.

Cousin Thelma was such a darling. I'll never forget her giving me a copy of her Howard manuscript. After that, she shared even more during our long correspondence. May she rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon her.

Bobby. I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing but I know that she was ready. She meant a lot to me and was a special lady. We have lost truly a wealth of historical knowledge and she will be greatly missed. I wish you the best in everything that you do.

What an amazing life your mother lived and the many people she inspired during her years here on earth-she was such a intelligent lady and did so much with her life-she will be missed but I know she is at rest now. Thinking of the whole family.

I was so sorry to hear of Mrs.Hansford's passing. She was our government teacher at York High School and she was our organist at Grafton Christian Church in Grafton for many years. She was such a sweet , kind lady and she cared about her students so much. We talk about the memories of so many teachers at our YHS reunions and she is the first one we speak about, she really loved being a teacher. May the Lord comfort you, you are all in my prayers. GOD BLESS YOU MRS.HANSFORD.

Bobby, Your mother was a very significant person in my younger days and I remember vividly our daily trips to George Wythe Junion High along with you and HL Smoot. I visited her many times in the years after I left Seaford and was always inspired by her energy and breadth of interests. She lived a long, fulfilling and productive life and left me and others with fond memories. God bless her soul and you and your family. Gerald Shields

My thoughts and prayers are with you, especially at this time of your great loss. In the summer of 1964 your Mother taught me at York High. She was a sweet lady and I would later get help from her on family genelogy. We also went exploring to old schools still standing from the 1800's. On one trip she brought her grandshild. He was 4 maybe. is that right? So sorry to hear of her passing, but have wonderful memories of that summer.

To the Family of Thelma Ironmonger Hansford. I am very sorry to read of the passing of your loved one. She was a gifted teacher and writer. Several years ago at the dedication of the Ironmonger Cemetery in Seaford, Thelma was pleased to meet so many of her cousins and reminisce about some of her students from the 1920s, one of whom was my father, Percy E. Ironmonger, Sr. She shared some comical stories. Again, my sincere regrets to your family.

Mrs. Thelma was a gift from God not only to her family, but to the many that knew and loved her. She will always be remembered by all that she helped trace their York Co. roots. She was truly ahead of her time. She will always remain in my heart.

Robert and family,
My sincere condolences to you all. The first day I met your mother although connected by lineage, we were total strangers. I left that day with the Ironmonger - Hopkins lineage and documented research to photocopy. Someone else needed info and I returned it before I had copied it with assurance from her, " you are welcome to it any time" A few weeks after returning the material, I received a large envelope in the mail. She had graciously hand copied the entire lot and sent it to me along with a note, "I thought you would like to have this, it gave me something to do." I will be forever grateful to her for her kindness, generosity and willingness to share the family history. You and I met later, Robert, by chance, regarding a 24' Morgan. It is a small world. Your mom made it so much better. She was an amazing individual.
