Harry Lee Holloway Jr.

GRAND FORKS, ND - Harry Lee Holloway, Jr., 88, died Saturday, June 7, 2014 in Grand Forks, ND. Born May 22, 1926 in York County, VA, to Harry Lee Holloway Sr. and Beatrice Ensley Holloway, he graduated from Poquoson High School in 1943 and entered Randolph Macon College. In 1944, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served as an X-Ray technician. He returned to Randolph Macon College, earning a Bachelor's of Science Degree, 1948. He earned a Masters of Arts, University of Richmond, 1951 and a Ph.D., University of Virginia, 1957. He did graduate and post-graduate work at the University of Virginia in parasitological research, the University of Michigan in immunological research, and at the University of South Carolina learning new research techniques. In 1953 he joined the faculty of Roanoke College, rising from assistant professor to chairman of the Biology Department. In 1969 he became Dean of Faculty at Western Maryland College, but yearned to be back in the classroom and laboratory. In 1971 he joined the Biology Department of the University of North Dakota. His greatest happiness and satisfaction was in his research and working with his graduate students. He was the recipient of numerous research grants from the Virginia Academy of Science, the National Science Foundation and the North Dakota Game & Fish Department. In 1964-65 he conducted research at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The U.S. Board of Geographic Names named Mount Holloway, Queen Alexandra Range in his honor. He is the author/co- author of numerous research papers published in scientific journals. He spent 1984-85 in Washington D.C, Polar Division, National Science Foundation, inspecting programs and operations in Antarctica and Alaska. He was a member of the Beta Beta Beta Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Parasitology Society, the Virginia Academy of Science, the American Microscopical Society, the Society Sigma Xi, the International Garrison Diversion Committee, the Dakotas Academy of Science, the American Legion, the Dakota Resource Counsel, and the Kiwanis Club (president and Lt. governor). The Randolph Macon Society of Alumni honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1986. On July 31, 1948 Harry and Juanita Yow were married and would have celebrated 66 years together in July. He is survived by his wife and four children: Lee (Becky) Holloway, children Hal (Tracy) and Ben Holloway, Amy (Bill) Foss, & Ben (Shiela) Worthy; Ellen (Mark) Betting, children, Rebecca and David; Ralph (Pam) Holloway, children Brittany (Steve) Robello, Peter and Ashley; Bryan (Wendy) Holloway, children Alex and Rachel; and great grandchildren Haley Betting, and Kekoa and Kainoa Robello. Also surviving are a sister Joyce (Hank) Hardaway, a sister-in-law Carolyn (Bob) Cuthill, five nephews, and two nieces. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 11:00 a.m., Wesley United Methodist Church, Grand Forks, ND.
