Mary Pattillo Obituary

Mary Louise Pattillo
Mary Louise Pattillo passed away peacefully May 2, 2015 with daughter Erin at her side. She enjoyed many recent visits with immediate family to include grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary is survived by eight children: Michael Francis, Tinker Thomas Patrick, Jr., John Paul, Phillip Anthony, Mary Margaret (Peggy), Timothy Sean, Christopher Gray, Erin Elizabeth, Brother Thomas, Sister Patricia and half-sister Vicki.
Mary was born in Ellensburg January 15, 1922 to Marie Fitterer and Thomas B. Pattillo. She grew up in the creative environment of Kittitas Valley pioneer grandparents Frank and Margaret (Maggie) Fitterer, where family fun included musical sessions which included crooning saxophones of Uncles Leo and Phillip Fitterer. She lived at 610 N. Ruby St., attended Lourdes Academy and arts-oriented Edison School where she learned to draw. Majoring in music, drama and art, she soon studied under Sarah Spurgeon at Central Washington College.
Mary loved to fly. Goals included achieving commercial pilot ratings. By 1944, while serving our nation during World War II, United States Army WAC, PFC Mary Pattillo had already completed solo private pilot training in Yakima.
After assigned duties with flight line ground crews at Victorville Air Base, Mary also performed with a hugely popular all Army Corps song & dance troupe entertaining wounded Veterans returning from the Pacific. At war's end, she married U.S. Army Cavalry Officer, Tinker Williams, Sr., in Fort Knox, Kentucky and began raising a family while living abroad for many years in post-war Europe and Middle East.
Being an Army wife and mother didn't stop her love for art. Continuing her studies at College of Architecture, Kansas State and University of Louisville, Mary achieved her Bachelor of Arts at University of Houston and awarded faculty scholarship to the Museum of Fine Arts School. She taught Art-After-School programs under auspices of Contemporary Arts Museum and membership in Houston Art League.
Mary Pat traveled America's west extensively. Ellensburg was always home but cold winters often found her driving thousands of miles to pitch her tent, raise her easel and create a fresh body of work for weeks at a time in Utah's Canyon lands, Sangre do Cristos or Georgia O'Keefe's New Mexico hills where she painted Ghost Ranch. She loved the breathtaking shapes and spectacular colors of the Grand Canyon. From Texas Bluebonnets to Native American lore; Pacific Coast lighthouses to Flatirons of Boulder; Cascades to Columbia River, Yakima Canyon, Cle Elum and Mount Stuart were among the many places she felt inspired.
U.S. Army wife and mother of eight from Munich to Monterey, Tehran to Ellensburg, Mary Pattillo's journey through life was filled with adventure, love for family and dedication to artistry found in countless private collections throughout America and our beautiful Kittitas Valley.
Memorial services will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 401 South Willow, Ellensburg, WA Friday June 5, 2015 @ 2:00pm. Reception follows. Guests and fellow Veterans are invited to share Honor Guard presentation of Colors, Taps & Veterans Salute with final prayer and moment of silence for Mary at Holy Cross Cemetery, 15th Ave (Dry Creek Rd,) Ellensburg, WA.

Another year passed. You are missed. I think if you often. Remembering just one of my favorite paintings of yours you called the little wildflowers. So beautiful. I can close my eyes and see it and see your beautiful smile as you are telling me about it. Oh lady as your landlord you would keep me on my toes. Trying to stop you from driving the last few years. Lord did I worry about you. It was my pleasure to have known you. RIP lovely.

Wow miss Mary, I checked my email today and this beautiful remembrance of you. Funny how you think about someone and then boom you get a call, email or letter. I think of you often. You were a wonderful, wild, creative soul that I miss.

Family Re Union

June 15, 2015

It was a great send off for Aunt Mary. To have so much family together was wonderful. 5 Strauhals, 4 Pattillos, 6 Rogers and all but one of the Williams made it a special event. Brad Fitterer, her friend Mike Pearson and Betsy Johnson honored us by coming. All the hard work paid off. God job Mike, Peggy and John Paul. And to Tim,Erin and Melody with Mackenzie for making the final road trip to bring her ashes home. What a blessing to have her legacy live on. The paintings I have will have so much meaning added in her memory. Rest in Peace Mary Pat!

...it wont be something to forget. I am fortunate to have a family that would remember mom in such a way that I know she would be proud. The funeral mass had me in tears and it was for the thought of mom "going to the third level" and family who also loved her which brought tears of joy and wonderment to my eyes. I have a lot of images and some video to share soon.

Thanks also for the family reunion that included all that could make it there - it was awesome and I know Jaron was also proud to be a part of it.

Phillip,
Again, thank you to you, Michael and John Paul for taking the time to personally come to see me to share the story about moving your dear Mother from Ellensburg to Colorado. I was quite humbled to know that in an indirect way we were able to assist in her move. I was equally touched by the thoughtfulness of you and your brothers to make the kind effort to thank me in person. That was certainly going above and beyond what anyone else would have done in that situation.

It was also an honor to have been able to attend the the funeral Mass of your mother. It was a beautiful and very personally service. I was not able to stay after Mass, so please give my best to your brothers and the rest of your family.

Finally, thank you for sharing the great photos of you Mother at the Rodeo parade in front of our dealership. What a small world indeed. We certainly are all more closely connected to one another than we really know.

Again, it was pleasure meeting you and your brothers and hearing more about your family history.

Kind regards,

Phil Kelleher
