I hadn't thought about Johnny Walker for a long time and then talking to my brother, just the other day, I said, "remember Johnny Walker...?" And we talked about him for a while. He was a fine fellow and is still missed to this day... God rest his soul...

Wow so late yet so shocked. I literally grew up with this man on our television set in Kettering Ohio. Way too young. My deepest belated condolences to his surviving family and friends. He will always be remembered as being kind, compassionate, humorous, and witty. God rest his soul.

I think this is the same Johnny Walker that worked briefly at WKGN in Knoxville TN in 1970 or 1971...top 40 format...was very good at his 6-10 pm slot..his "catch phrase" was I never talk while the record is playing....he let me intern with him (answering phones, picking songs, etc)...was very quick witted and looking back at the times, he truly was ahead of his time on the air...he had a DJ study course that he developed that he sold...he let me have it for half price !!hahaha...anyway I think its the same guy, and it is a great loss.

Dear Barbara,
I don't know if you remember me, but you and Johnny were good friends of my wife, Jane, and I when Johnny and I were DJ's at WPTR in Albany in 1965-66. I am so sorry to just have learned of Johnny's passing. It all started when I received an e-mail from someone at Radio London in the UK who had stumbled upon an old aircheck of me at WPTR on the internet. He told me about a DJ on BBC-2 who took Johnny's name around 1967 based on a WPTR Johnny Walker jingle that was "pirated" from the states. That Johnny Walker has made a 40 year radio career using Johnny's name. He is still on BBC-2 radio. That led me to "Google" Johnny Walker and I found this Guest Book site.
I remember you and Johnny well and have thought about you guys many times over the years. I am so sorry I did not know how to contact you until now. Johnny was a wonderful man, so genuine and good at heart.
I trust you are well and I would love to hear from you.
All best wishes and my sincerest sympathies to you and your family.

How many MDA telethon benefits did we do together? Lord, I can't count 'em all. I remember best the nights in Coldwater before the bass tournament with John and Dale Huffman, Dr. Creep and me, among others. John was as committed to MDA and as passionate toward finding a cure as Jerry Lewis is.
We shared many a moment, many a joke...I remember one telethon jumping under the camera giving him the "stretch" sign because Sue Dunaway behind the scenes wasn't done with the final tote board count yet! Off the air, John was a real person, and a good friend. To say I miss him terribly is an understatement.

I was deeply saddened to just learn of the passing of Johnny Walker. I worked with Johnny - m'lords, and m'ladies - Walker back in 1966, at WPTR Radio, in Albany, NY. What a terrific radio announcer he was...he was a professional in every sense of the word...He had the top-rated late afternoon drive-time program - used to call it the Walker Room. My deepest condolences to his family..

I too remember Johnny Walker on WING in the late 60s before his move to WKEF-TV. He did a funny show in the evenings on WING sometimes jokingly calling it "the Johnny Walker radio problem!" Listening to WING in the evenings was always a treat. We'll miss you Johnny...tell Gene "By Golly" Barry and John Hall I said "HI!" while you're up there in Top 40 heaven.

Dear D'Aun and family,
Your dad was so kind to me when I was having a difficult time as a little girl in a broken home. Living next door to your family was so fun because all the characters from channel 22 would drop by and I got to see them in person. I will never forget the time he took me to the circus with you and bought me popcorn. That was one of the most exciting times I can remember as a kid. God bless you and your family.

My deepest sympathies to the Walker family. Johnny was always a good friend, and I will always appreciate the opportunity he gave me to produce at Channel 22. My first memories of Johnny are at the Oyster Eating Competition at Jay's Seafood Restaurant. As I recall, he was doing a lot better than I was that day! "Thanks for getting me into those wrestling matches at Hara, Johnny!" Dayton has lost another broadcast pioneer.

Johnny Walker gave me my first opportunity to become a television news anchor and I am grateful for that. He had a winning personality and an optimistic outlook--a really great guy. Johhny and I always reminisced about the time that we attnded the Reds' opener in 1970 as guests of the late Pat Williams, owner of WING. It was the last opening day at old Crosley Field and that young bunch of Reds won the pennant that year only to lose to the Orioles in the World Series.

I had the privilage to talk to Johnny on the radio, in August of last year, as he was in town to visit family.. I grew up listening to Johnny Walker on WFOB (where he got his start in radio)..I was actually shaking interviewing him, I never talked to a living ledgend before..we talked for about 45 minutes..I had a song cued up and asked Johnny to introduce the song...he hesitated for a few seconds and then BANG like the pro he is,the words fell from his lips like the true professional he is..Johnny is one of the main reasons I got into radio..You will be missed very much Johnny..

If we are LUCKY...once in a lifetime we have a best friend who stays in our heart forever. So it is with Jack Walker. We were just 15 when we met. Our wonderful memories are filled with fun and laughter as we spent carefree days of being young and loving life. Jack was a teen disc jockey at WFOB in Fostoria, OH. We loved record hops, "The Diamonds", his Henry J, the Black Renault, Watson Avenue and all of our double dates with he and Barb. 42 years ago we married with Jack and Barb as Best Man and Maid-Of-Honor. 5 months later Jack and Barbara were married and we attened as Best Man and Matron-Of-Honor. Our lives, travels and families are and always will be bonded by a special love and friendship. We love you Barb, D'Aun, Jacqueline and Leah....Jack will always be our BEST MAN.

I had the privilege of "selling Dayton" and the Hara complex with Johnny in the 1980's. As Director of Marketing of the Dayton Convention Bureau, we joined forces on many occasions pertaining to the convention business. Johnny was a true professional, cordial and an "all around" great guy. I must admit, though I knew of Johnny's media background and his work with the MDA, I am astounded as to how much of a celebrity and community ambassador he was. In my dealings with him, he never attempted to "use" his star status in any way, instead he portrayed that genuine personality that made him the true gentleman he was.
I left the Dayton area in 1993. However, Johnny's connection to me remained through a very unusual communication source. My parents retired and moved to The Villages of Lady Lake, Florida...and guess who shortly thereafter became their neighbor? Mr. Walker. My parents are very saddened by the news that I broke to them yesterday.
On behalf of my folks, we offer our sincere condolences to the Walker family. May God bless all of you as you deal with your immense loss and continue life's journey.

Reading the guest book is both a testament to Johnny and a walk down memory lane.
Thanks to the Internet, the news of Johnny's passing has spread around the world, and allowed all of us to share each others memories of our time with Johnny.
I was only able to work with Johnny on a few occasions, but each was special.
My favorites: as a vendor at a trade show at Hara, where he came in to make sure that everything was going well; and many years ago when I was working at WBZI-FM and went over to the telethon in the middle of the night. Though you could tell he was tired, he was as sharp at 2 am as many people are when they first show up to work in the morning.
His enthusiasm was contagious, too!
My deepest sympathies to Johnny's family.

A friend told me about Johnny's passing and I went immediately to the DDN site and read Dale's wonderful tribute to him. It brought back so many memories.
In the 60s,I worked with Johnny and Steve Kirk and so many other wild and crazy people at WING -- it was a wonderful time. I went on to be a news director in radio and TV so Johnny and I would see each other at conferences from time to time and catch up -- but I haven't talked to him in many years.
Broadcasting is a business in which it is said you must go to grow -- find bigger jobs in bigger markets. Many people have found fame and fortune that way -- but I would suggest that by staying in Dayton and serving his community in so many ways, he found the greatest rewards of all -- the love and respect of those he cared about the most.
My family sends our sincere condolences to the Walker family. In our hearts he will always be smileing.

My deepest sympathies to Johnny's family. I spent many days on the road with Johnny during our WKEF days...covering Reds spring training, Motorcycling with KK, following Salt Walther to Indy and the memorable firey start...to directing "Contact", the "Big Brothers Auction" and the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon. Johnny was the best...a civic-minded guy who was quite the practical joker and someone who has had a real effect on those who had the good fortune of working with him. Johnny will always be in my thoughts as I reminisce about the good 'ole days.

Our paths crossed several times during my 25 years in Dayton and whether Johnny was working in radio, televsion or at Hara, he was always helpful, professional and passionate about his love for his family and for the Miami Valley. Johnny loved to work at 22. And because of that, it seemed he was always on the air. I produced a number of programs there...The Jerry Lewis Telethon, Evening Magazine, Motorcycling with KK, the Daytona 200, plus a huge number of specials, and Johnny was in ALL of them. When given the chance, he would fill in on the 9am Morning Movie and Clubhouse 22 at 3pm…that’s just how much he loved it.
When a broadcast was over, you pretty much knew where you stood with him – happy, ticked, or whatever - but at the end of the day, he was a gentleman and a pro. I will remember him for his jokes, his laugh, and the relentless pranks he pulled on the crew.
Johnny was a great personality at 22, he loved Dayton, and he really knew how life ought to be enjoyed.

Through my school years at
Archbishop Alter High, I can remember listening to Steve Kirk and of course, Johnny Walker. Talk
about class act, it just didn't get any better than that. In the early
80's I had the pleasure of working at Hara Arena as a Security officer.
Talk about a dream come true when I found out that Johnny Walker was going to be Vice-President for Hara.
He always made everyone feel like you were one of the family. He would
stop and say "Hi", ask how things are in you department, and he would truly listen to what you had to say. No matter how trivial it was.
I just want to say that it was truly an honor, and a pleasure to work for such a wonderful man.
God Bless you Johnny Walker.

Like so many others I watched Johnny growing up in Dayton. I also got to work with him and D'aun at Ch. 22. I consider myself fortunate to have known him and watch him grow from a "TV personality" to a compassionate, hard working news director. When he took over 22Alive! all employees met individually with him. Everyone thought he and I didn't get along and would butt heads but we walked out of that meeting with respect for each other, our goals and love of the community. I never met anyone else who loved Dayton more. Truly, his passing is our loss. God bless him and his family.

When I was just a teenager, Johnny let me audition for a weather reporter job on WKEF. I didn't have a clue what I was doing. He was so nice and spent quite awhile just chatting with me afterwards about my goals. Eventually, I did do the weather and news for WKEF. I could always count on Johnny for a smile and a warm hello no matter where our paths crossed over time. I can just see him now with the Dayton area broadcast legends that went before him...they'll show him around "the beat" in their corner of heaven. God bless you Johnny and those of us left behind to miss you.

To The Walker Family,
I had just read Dale Huffman's DDNews online story Tuesday about Johnny Walker hosting the live broadcast at Hara Arena in 1992 before Johnny Carson retired. Called my mom in Dayton to tell her and she relayed the sad news that Johnny had, in fact, just passed away. So sad. What a wonderful man.
I count him among the influences that, like a lot of folks emailing condolences, got me into broadcasting too.
Rest in peace Johnny Walker..

I'll never forget the story - Johnny was stopped by a police officer for crossing at the middle of the street. When asked his name by the officer, he replied, "J. Walker." I used to volunteer for Access 30 Dayton and my father and I would video tape the toughman contest. Johnny was always willing to assist and help out where he could. I once phoned Johnny, well a few years back when my Neices wanted to see some Disney on ice show and explained that the school was limited income, and he arranged the whole class to have tickets, drinks and anything else the children needed to make their experiance fun. He really was a fantastic man to know. Later in life when The Dayton Bombers played Ice hockey at Hara, he went out of his way to make sure the fans were happy. Then with the ICE Bandits as well. RIP my friend.

I thought about Johnny recently, wondering how he was doing in retirement. I have never met a warmer person. When I came to the Dayton Market in 1972, Johnny was already established in the broadcasting community and even though I worked for a competitor, WHIO-AM, he went out of his way every time we came in contact to make me feel welcome to the community. I called him to find out how a pro handled a charity job when I took over the Leukemia-Radiothon broadcast in 1975. He was generous with his time. If he saw me in later years, even from a distance, he would shout out a greeting. Johnny will be greatly missed.

But it wasn't until 1969 when we became friends, when I became a student at the International Broadcasting School. Johnny at that time was school administrator and one of my instructors. In spite of my visual impairment, Johnny believed in my future in broadcasting and helped me land my first on air position at WIUC in Winchester, IN. Johnny, I will always remember you as a person that truly believed in my ability and encouraged me to suceed. You will be missed.

Barb and the girls, I feel your pain right now. I loved Johnny like my own dad, and i told him that many times. I know God works in mysterious ways, and this was just one of them. The last time I talked to him, I told him I loved him. I thank God for that. Traci, Haley and Kinsey send their love as well. Dayton has lost a true legend, but more importantly, a true friend.

Johnny Walker put me in front of the camera after being in radio for years. It was freightening. But not as freightening as playing softball with him in the annual charity games at the K of C park.
I have a lot of great memories of Dayton and Johnny was part of many of them. God bless, Johnny.

Johnny, as I sit in a newsroom in Phoenix I smile to myself reflecting on all I have accomplished in my career in television. The many places I have been and the famous and infamous people I have come in contact with. It has been such a long time since April, 1985 when I sat in your office and told you how this volunteer at DATV, then Access-30-Dayton, should be the newest addition to the 22 Alive! News crew. You took a chance on me and gave me my start in the television industry. That is something I will never forget. You remained a friend when you moved to Hara. I will forever cherish the fun times we had watching and laughing at the wrestling matches at Hara.
Thank you for everything, Johnny. God bless you.

My first job was taking dedications over the phone for Johnny when he was at WIZE radio in Springfield.
He nicknamed me Cowboy Bob. I was the envy of my highschool chums when Johnny came to my house to play basketball. He asked me to bring my skateboard to work and he rode it dowm a scary hill in the dark. He was so much fun. I have not seen him for 30 years, but I still carry fond memories of him.

My sympathy to the Walker family. I worked under Johnny when I was at WKEF in the early 80's. He was always down to earth and so easy to talk to. Although he has been away from Dayton for awhile, his legacy will remain with his accomplishments at WKEF, the MD Association and Hara Arena.
