Marvin Andersen Obituary

Marvin V. Andersen, MD

New York, NY - Surrounded by his loving family, Marvin Verne Andersen, MD, age 89, passed away on April 28, 2021 at his home in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Marvin was born in New York, New York on March 17, 1932 to Marvin Verne Andersen, Sr. and Ella Marie Butzer and grew up in North Muskegon, Michigan. Marvin graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Chemistry in 1954 and a degree in Medicine in 1958 and, having excelled in his studies, was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. During his time there, Marvin met Kathryn G. Spackman, a PhD candidate, whom he married on September 4, 1954.

Marvin dedicated his life to the service of others. Following graduation, Marvin interned at Delaware Hospital and completed his residency at Delaware Hospital and the Hospital for the Women of Maryland, where he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. Serving the Wilmington community, Marvin practiced medicine for more than 40 years and delivered thousands of children before retiring.

Marvin's commitment to civil service extended beyond his profession. Marvin was active in the Rotary Club of Wilmington, Delaware up until his death, having joined in 1970. In 2005, Marvin and Kathryn moved to Charlestown Farm in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where they and their children had started a CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture). It has become a mainstay of the community, providing sustainably-grown produce for 170 families each year.

Most prominent among his passions stood Marvin's love for playing the trumpet. Marvin started learning at age eight and continued performing throughout his entire life, including on his last day. Marvin played with numerous organizations, including the University of Michigan Concert Band, where he was first chair and solo cornetist under the direction of William D. Revelli, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, the Chesapeake Silver Cornet Brass Band, and the Rhythm Doctors.

Marvin loved travelling and explored the world with his family. He visited nearly every U.S. state, dozens of countries, and all seven continents. Marvin's travels included medical studies in China and Africa, and even trips to the South Pole, where he served as the ship's doctor aboard an icebreaker. Marvin particularly enjoyed the outdoors, hiking through 26 of the country's 63 National Parks, and birdwatching in South America.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Kathryn; four children, James S. Andersen (Linda), William M. Andersen (Elizabeth), Sarah A. Willig (Hugh), and Donald H. Andersen (Elizabeth); fifteen grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and his sister, Jeanne Dustin.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Marvin's life at Charlestown Farm, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021.

What I remember about Uncle Marvin was that he could expand his loud voice and big smile to reach out to everyone and make them feel included. He embraced everyone by giving of himself and getting them to give, too. I dedicate this image to him and to all of you, hoping you will continue to feel his embrace inside you, and share yours outside you.

My deepest sympathies to
Dr Andersen’s family. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was my doctor for many years. When my son was born on St Patrick’s Day, he was excited that he shared his birthday and said “I’m exactly 50 years older than your baby” with a big smile!
I remember the trumpet in his office and pictures of his family.
Rest In Peace Dr Andersen. I’ll always remember you with a smile.

I notice that many people mention Marvin's kindness. I think of an example from the 1940s--when he was about 8 and I was 5. He had a bicycle and I had none, so he shared his with me for a year or so until our dad could buy a new one for each of us. What a good brother!

Dr. Andersen brings wonderful memories. Beginning with his family being a part of the 3-week trip to Europe and Russia, ending at the Eiffel Tower in Paris with the Brandywine High School Band and Blazers from Wilmington, DE of which I was a part of. To becoming a nurse and working with him in the hospital setting with his patients. I wish the family the best. Debbie Vernon (Lynn's sister).

Dr Andersen was the sweetest and caring person to everyone. Not a person who had the pleasure of sharing a moment or conversation with him does not feel sadness at this time. All our thoughts and prayers are with all his family. Thank you for sharing such a Great Man with all of us.

With deepest sympathy to Dr. Andersen's wife and family. My Mom, sisters and I were patients of Dr. Andersen for many years. He was always so kind and understanding. May he rest in peace and may the love of family and friends bring you comfort during this time.

Dr. Andersen comforted me thru years of infertility and performed several surgeries on me. Finally, after years of trying I had my daughter 45 years ago. He couldn't believe it when he told me I was pregnant, she was a miracle indeed and still is. My heartfelt sympathy to the family, what a wonderful human being, we are all the better for having known his kindness, knowledge, and compassion. I will never forget him.

Marvin Anderson loved to teach. He even sought out residents if he thought they needed to learn something from him.
I was a lowly pediatric resident in the mid 70’s. When I rotated at the Wilmimgton General Hospital, I followed him around like a puppy. He taught me something each time.
Marvin’s warm smile and lopsided grin were always welcoming.
Rest now Marvin, and thank you.

My daughter was delivered by Dr Andersen 50 years ago today. He was scrubbing for a Csection when the nurse called him for my delivery. He said,”You couldn’t wait could you?” He had a great sense of humor!

What a great loss. Dr. Anderson was such a wonderful physician and caring soul. I remember when I was a nursing student, I had to spend the day with him in his office. He was an absolute delight. While we were waiting for a patient to arrive, I was studying from my class notes. He asked to see my notes and said," You have to know all this stuff? You should just become a doctor!" He was a true gentleman . Prayers for his family and friends. Rest easy, Dr. Anderson.

Dr. Andersen,
Rest in peace. You were the best doctor that I ever had. I was not lucky enough to have you deliver any of my seven children as you were not on call when I went into labor. I also hoped you were on call as I appreciated your gentleness, kindness and patience with all of your patients. You were my mom's doctor and mine and we both thought the world of you. l will keep your family in my prayers.

Doc,
I'm sure you are smiling!! Now the heavens have trumpeter to add to the orchestra! You were a wonderful mentor, a great physician (count my 4 in the thousands), and always someone who lifted me up when I would see you. When it came time for my own daughter to seek advice about career choice...well you were there for that, too! I won't say goodbye...but rather, see you! PS...University of MI fight song really was the best!

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Andersen’s passing. He delivered my so, 52 years ago and was so comforting during the 48 hours of labor! I remember when my mother had a visit with Dr. Andersen and heard a trumpet playing from the exam room...he was playing a song for my mom!
