Carl Schnee Obituary

Carl Schnee

Wilmington - Carl Schnee, age 85, of Wilmington, DE, died on May 30th at Country House of Wilmington. He was born in Philadelphia on January 2, 1936 to Lee Rockower and Abraham Schnee.

After graduating from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Mr. Schnee received his B.A degree from Muhlenberg College and his law degree from Villanova University School of Law. In May 2000, he received a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Delaware. Mr. Schnee had been a member of the Delaware Bar since 1962, practicing in the areas of general litigation, personal injury, professional malpractice, and criminal law. After serving in the Office of the Public Defender of Delaware, he was a partner with Tybout, Redfearn, and Schnee; then with Schnee and Castle; and later was managing partner with Prickett, Jones, Elliot, Kristol & Schnee, where, during an 18-year tenure, he was the senior member of the firm's litigation section. He was appointed by President Clinton as the United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, serving from 1999-2001. After leaving the U.S. Attorney's office, Mr. Schnee joined the Wilmington office of Duane Morris, and in January 2003, joined Bifferato, Bifferato, & Gentilotti. Carl retired from the active practice of law in 2008.

Aside from his extensive legal career, Mr. Schnee served as chair of the board for the YMCA Resource Center, the Delaware Art Museum, the Juvenile Re-Entry Program, each for several years, and for nearly a decade on the Delaware Criminal Justice Council. Carl was also a board member of the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Delaware State Arts Council, the Delaware Center for Justice, and the Delaware Bar Foundation, among other organizations.

His numerous awards and honors include the Distinguished Service Award from the Delaware State Bar Association, the Outstanding Service Award in Criminal Justice from the Delaware Council on Crime and Justice, and the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the YMCA of Delaware. Carl was the 2014 recipient of both the John Gardner Lifetime Achievement Award from Common Cause and the Order of the First State - Excellence in Serving Your Community and Your State from Delaware Governor Jack Markell.

Later in life, Mr. Schnee turned to teaching at the University of Delaware's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where he instructed courses in criminal law, government, and programs on Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Woodrow Wilson, and others. He was also a long-time student at Osher. Carl was known for his boundless energy, love of a good joke (or a bad one), devotion to hiking, biking, and running, and his ability to befriend everyone he met.

Carl is survived by his wife Doris, of 62 years; his children Michael, of Wilmington, DE; Paul (Amy), of Brooklyn, NY; and Linda (Martin), of Takoma Park, MD. He is also survived by his sister Judy Arsht of Santa Barbara, CA, and three grandchildren.

Well-wishers can pay their respects on Saturday June 19, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, in Wilmington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Muhlenberg College, Villanova University, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and the YMCA of Delaware. Humble. Beloved people generally are. Carl’s love and interest in others always preceded him and fueled his career to excellence. We learned more about him in this obituary than he ever let us know. Others knew, and awarded him literally and with what seems to be unanimous Love, respect and trust. Especially from his own family.
Inspirational even during years of sickness, Carl endured physical traumas and challenges without complaint and even humor and good cheer for all around him.
His sister, Judy, my mother, was always praising her little brother, and always will. Through her love of her brother, we knew him best. Thanksgivings were our main family gatherings at the Schnee home. I remember when I was teenish, he asked me to drop the uncle title and just call him Carl. A very special visit once to California, where I raised my family, Carl spent time sharing his fun imaginative stories with my young girls, as we shared a beach day.
Carl showed us how to be and live well. May his memory be a blessing and his days in the sun he loved. Carl was a light for all and lives on in all of us whose lives he touched.
With Love to his beloved family, his traditions and love live on; Franny.

On behalf of all the students who attended Carl's marvelous classes at Osher Life Long Institute at the University of Delaware, I would like to say we will all miss seeing him. He was an intelligent man who loved to share his knowledge with his students and it was a pleasure to watch him enjoy himself in front of his class.

I'm so sad to hear about Carl. I got to know him and worked with him during his 2002 campaign for Attorney General, and he was a generous mentor as I attended law school and became a member of the Delaware Bar. I was also fortunate to enjoy a Colorado hike with him one summer while we were both in the Breck area at the same time. A true class act who will be greatly missed. My sympathies to Doris and family.

Carl was a great lawyer with whom I had several trials when I was a young Deputy Attorney General. Also ran and rode many miles with Carl who was the founder of the “ Biking Blue Hens “ bike club. Have fond memories of Carl at Ragbrai the annual 500 mile bike ride across Iowa that I did 13 times ! He always enjoyed himself and spread that joy to all around him. R.I.P. my friend ❤♂

Carl was a unique and wonderful human being ! A fine athlete who helped get me into a lifelong exercise regimen , a tremendous trial lawyer who turned what could have been a long messy trial into a one day victory and most importantly, a great friend who ALWAYS brightened my days with his warm smile.

My wife Sandi and I send our "Prayers for the Peace that Passeth Understanding" on the passing of this wonderful man Carl Schnee.

I came to know Carl through the Community, Politics and Business together, and later we were fellow Rotarians, when Carl joined the Rotary Club of Wilmington. He was a fine individual, really a mensch, with great instincts and a provocative sense of humor. I still retain this mental image from some kind of Delaware Art Museum fund-raiser of 20, or more, years ago, his diminutive figure adorned with a black curly wig of some kind for, perhaps, a Bob Dylan look, or one of the other 60s icons.

We send our condolences to all of Carl's friends and family on the loss of this great fellow. He will be missed. RIP, Carl!

A great guy and tremendous raconteur. I found out he wrestled at Muhlenberg, so we would talk wrestling almost every time I saw him.
