Daniel Chapman Obituary

Daniel M. Chapman, beloved friend and husband to Fran, passed away peacefully on October 9th after a courageous five year battle with ALS. Born in Norwich, CT, Dan was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy. He obtained his undergraduate degree in history/political science from Boston University, then migrated to Boulder in 1974 to pursue his master's degree at the University of Colorado. His desire to put this knowledge into practice and public service led him to a career with the Colorado Legislative Council in 1978. His work there inspired a change of course, and he completed his master's degree in public administration at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver in 1991. He continued to proudly serve the legislative council until his retirement in 2008. He carried on his legacy of public service in volunteer work for AARP and his neighborhood association. When he received his diagnosis of ALS in 2012, he lobbied for the ALS Association locally and in Washington, DC, and helped raise money for research. As recently as a week before his death, he participated in the annual ALS Walk, raising well over $5,000 for the cause. In addition to a large group of wonderful, caring friends, Dan leaves behind his wife, Fran and his large and loving familymother Lorraine Chapman, sisters Diana, Denise, and Dawn, brother Douglas, and all their spouses and extended families. He is predeceased by his father, Raymond N. Chapman. Dan and Fran would also like to acknowledge the ALS Association for its unending support and assistance, the Denver Hospice for its compassion and care, and especially, his amazing team of caregivers and companions - Kathy, Holly, Ilia, Tammy, Aubrey, Vanessa, Cherry, Teresa, Elena and Jen. You were all his angels, and we are so very grateful to have welcomed you into our hearts and home. Donations in Dan's memory may be made to the ALS Association of the Rocky Mountains and Denver Hospice. Memorial Service, Sunday, 10/29, 1PM, Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd. Denver, CO.

Dan was an enjoyable colleague on the AARP volunteer advocates committee, where I got to know him over the last several years. He tackled the topics which gave the rest of us the shivers, like taxes and finance, utilities and legislative process. He approached our volunteer advocacy and occasional legislative testimony with an excellent sense of humor and balance. We all enjoyed being a part of the committee with him and know that his contributions helped our citizens and the state.

It was my pleasure to be friends with Dan and Fran. I was their travel agent. Having lived in Denver many years, I helped Dan and Fran make their travel dreams come true. Dan and Fran once accompanied myself and my wife on a cruise to the Caribbean. We had such a wonderful time. I will remember Dan and Fran during those happier times. My wife and I did visit Dan and Fran twice in the last five years. Its a little harder since we moved to Asheville, NC 15 years ago. But I always stayed in touch by calling or E-mailing, and praying for Dan daily. Its good to know that Dan is walking and talking and once again living free. Enjoy my friends, you are most deserved . ..

I am honored to have known Dan for over 15 years. We started out on a professional level, me as his personal trainer, him as trainee and almost immediately became lasting friends. He was always so driven and focused even when he was diagnosed with ALS, he knew he would beat it and we worked together almost until the end. I will always cherish our healthy debates about Baseball, Woman's College basketball and anything pertaining to Boston. He was a intelligent, remarkable man and I will miss him dearly. Also sending love to his amazing wife Fran and his family.

I did't know him well, but I remember his awesome sense of humor when he made the toast at Terri and Doug's wedding. So sad for this terrible loss. God bless and comfort the family.

I worked with Dan from 1999 to 2006 at the State Capital. He was always the consummate professional. I will be ever grateful to him for his leadership and effort in making the Council of State Goverments-West annual meeting a huge success in 2006 In Breckenridge. May he Rest In Peace and his family and friends always remember what a great person he was.

Dan Chapman was an outstanding public servant, working and supporting our system of self government by providing his expertise to the Colorado State Legislature. I had the pleasure to know Dan and work with him very closely when I was in the House and Senate, and appreciate all he did for us all these many years. He was a gentleman and a scholar, and added much to all he touched.
