Katie was a true sweet friend. I've missed her smile. And her crazy personality. Seminary isn't the same without her.
Even though we were just school friends, I've never been more grateful for an amazing person like Katie.

Katelyn (Katie) was a joy.

She would come into class with a face like the sun, giggly, happy.

We all miss her terribly. Please know that her class feels her loss like an anvil to the chest. We mourn her.

I reread Katelyn's introduction discussion on Wednesday; the prompt asks students to introduce themselves and a topic they would be interested in exploring. This was her response:

"My name is Katelyn Smith, this is my last semester at snow. I will probably be transferring to Utah State after I do some humanitarian trips this year. I love being outside and exploring things. I've lived in Utah my whole life, and I love it. Some topics that I am interested in are athletics and mental health. A controversial topic that I wish I knew more about would probably be mental health. There are a lot of people that suffer from mental health problems, and I think people should be more informed. "

It's a simple introduction, but her interest in mental health (merging with her love athletics) is wise and compassionate. She eventually changed her focus to the effects of minimum wage on middle-lower class workers. Again, Katelyn showed her compassion; she desperately wanted to understand the world and make it a better place for the people in it--what a wonder.

We will hold onto her brightness as we celebrate her life. Our thoughts and well-wishes are with you.

Best,

Oh Nannette and James, my heart is aching for you.
What a precious and beautiful person she has always been. I've watched her from the time she was a beautiful little girl in Tanner's preschool group and she just grew more lovely. Know that you are in our hearts and prayers.

Dear James, Nannette and Family,

Richard just told me about the passing of your beautiful daughter. It made me so sad for all of you. I've never met Katelyn, but her obituary gave me a sense of what a fun, wonderful person she was. You have such a good family.

Nannette, you were so kind to supply the rolls for my uncle Blake's funeral. We appreciated your show of support at that time.

Please know that Brent and I are praying for all of you. We send our love and condolences.

Sincerely, Nancy Yorgason

Katie Smith was a kind, generous, and fun-loving girl with the biggest of hearts. I went to school with Katie, and though I did not know her super closely, she had a significant impact on my life, greater than most. I struggled a lot through high-school, and my senior year was especially rough. I became really bitter for awhile, and Katie was one of the only people who extended kindness and acceptance to me. I am so sorry for the loss everyone who knew Katie is now feeling and I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Katie. No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child. There is no doubt that Katie is now and even brighter light than she emanated when she was here with us. Such a beautiful souled girl will always be in all our hearts. She will never be forgotten.
