Ashley Okland Obituary

Ashley Okland

West Des Moines

Ashley Okland, 27, officially became an Angel on Friday, April 8, 2011. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 12, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, 209 N. 2nd Ave. in Huxley, Iowa from 4 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines, Iowa. A burial will be held in Huxley.

Ashley was born on December 30, 1983 in Ames, Iowa. Growing up, Ashley was involved in sports, dance, 4-H, and piano. She attended Ballard High School, and after two years at the University of Northern Iowa she transferred to Iowa State University where she graduated in 2006.

A transplanted country girl at heart, she lived happily in West Des Moines with her "Hun" Eric and new pup, Indi. Above all else, Ashley loved spending time with her family and friends. Always on the go, her biggest struggle was finding the time to make everyone feel as special as she thought they should. She began her real estate career, which quickly became a passion, at the JDR Group in 2007 and became an Iowa Realty Agent in 2010. Actively involved in a number of charities and organizations, her (limited) free time was spent as a Young Variety board member, Big Sister, and avid Young Professionals Connection supporter. Always the event planner, she enjoyed traveling, concerts, golfing (The Legacy!), exercising, and just being busy. A beautiful girl inside and out, she will be missed terribly by all those who've been fortunate enough to know her.

Ashley is survived by the love of her life, Eric Grubb (WDM), sister Brittany Okland (Minneapolis), brother Josh Okland (Ames), father Tim Okland (Kelley), mother Deb Cochran (Huxley), grandmother Margaret Okland (Huxley), grandmother Marilyn Gregg (Clarion), ten loving aunts and uncles, and 33(!) cousins.

Ashley was preceded in death by her grandfathers Kenneth Okland and Charlie Gregg.

The family would like to thank all those that offered their love and support during this extremely difficult time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ashley Okland Memorial Fund. Distributions will be made to her and her family's favorite charities. (Mail to 30048 530th Ave, Kelley, IA, 50134).

My husband and I had the privilege of meeting Ashley by showing us home in that area when we came to Des Moines looking for homes with our intention of moving back to our home town (Des Moines). Ashley was a caring, loving person and always giving a helping hand when needed she will be missed and will be a guardian angel and looking out for Brittany and her family forever. R.I.P. Ashley

As a REALTOR myself, Ashley's story has special meaning. It is especially poignant because she was so young and had so much more to contribute to the lives of her family, friends and associates. Just as God is aware of and cares about 'one sparrow falling to the ground', so does He feel about Ashley. I share your loss.

I did not know Ashley, but she was showing a open house and my family and i went into the house she was showing. She was very kind and helped us with our answers. she talked to us about Iowa State and about other homes, also about our home choice. when i saw this on the news, i was very shocked and stunned. how could this happen to such a wonderful girl? she is in heaven and is a angel looking over her family and iowa reality family as well. god bless.

Ashley was an amazing person. I vividly remember spending a day with her and some of her classmates at the high school state basketball tournament. She was so sweet and was a blast to be around. Our prayers go out to all of her family and friends in this difficult time. I know it has been said but it deserves repeating, Ashley has always been, and will always be, an Angel. So sorry for your loss.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

*I did not know Ashley, but I do know alot of people who were horribly hurt by this tragedy. I attend HOPE and have heard nothing but wonderful things about her. We all know God has a plan and I have faith that Ashley's the Angel He's planned for her to be! The day will come, that they'll come down for us, in time I promise you will see. Until that day, thoughts and prayers to you from me!
God Bless

How proud Ashley your family must be to have such beautiful thoughts and memories written about you. You will be in missed in every aspect of your life.
