Jackson Wilson Obituary

Jackson Shields Wilson, 66, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, surrounded by his family. Memorial service: A celebration of Jackson's life will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McKinney Memorial Bible Church with a reception following at Shady Oaks Country Club. Open visitation Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Young Life Fort Worth, 5512 Bellaire Drive South, Suite B, Fort Worth, Texas 76109; or Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County, 1331 E. Lancaster, Fort Worth, Texas 76102. Jackson was born in Fort Worth to Robbie and Jack Wilson on Oct. 7, 1946. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1964 and Texas Christian University. He grew up enjoying the outdoors with this dad. They spent many years camping, hunting, fishing and golfing together. He was very proud of being an Eagle Scout and having served in the United States Marine Reserve. He married his wife of 44 years, Candy Taylor Wilson, in 1969. Together they raised two daughters, Lori and Whitney. Jackson worked as a site selector for Southland Corporation before forming Wilson Properties with his father and Lone Star Land Co. with several friends. He served the city of Fort Worth by giving his time to the Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustment. He also served on the boards of Young Life Fort Worth, Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County and Shady Oaks Country Club. Jackson was a member of the McKinney Memorial Bible Church where he served many years in his daughters' Sunday school classes. He was always available to help with retreats and conferences. He loved being with the Young Life kids and made his Wilson Lake Ranch available for them whenever they wanted. His grandchildren loved going to Wilson Lake Ranch and his lakehouse at Horseshoe Bay. He was just beginning to pass on to them his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and enjoying the wild flowers and hummingbirds. He also spent many hours teaching them to love golf at his second home, Shady Oaks. Jackson was affectionately tagged with the name "POJ" (Poor Ol' Jackson) by his close friend, Tim Thompson. When grandchildren came along, it became his grandpa name. His greatest joy was spending time with family. He loved life and people; he never met a stranger and was never at a loss for words. The quietness from his absence will now be a constant reminder of the great man we have all lost. His family wishes to express great appreciation to the doctors and nurses of the CVICU unit at UT Southwestern St. Paul in Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robbie and Jack Wilson. Survivors: Wife, Candius Taylor Wilson; daughters, Lori L. Wilson and Whitney Jones and her husband, Christopher; and grandchildren, Taylor Rose Jones, Wilson Christopher Jones and Karis Jackson Jones.

Flash back to 1973 and moving next door to you and Jackson on Ems Rd. How much we have loved you guys for 45 years. Jackson was forever 21 years old and I loved that about him. That sweet bird of youth! We could play remember when. . all night! Like the time I served dessert with strawberries and lots of whipped cream and it slid off the plate into Jackson's lap. He just sat there looking at it. Clint had already passed away before Jackson went to the hospital. He was the love of my life. Candy I pray that you are not staying homebound. Jackson, go rest high on that mountain son. You've earned your rest. Make a place for us.

This may seem strange, but I never knew Jackson. I did however inherit a Bible from my late grandparents, Bernard and Elizabeth Woodard of Spring Hill, Tenn., and at the back was a picture of Jackson when he was 17. Jackson's and my great-grandparents were MW and Ida Lou Woodard of Fayetteville, TN. The Bible was given to them as wedding present when they married in 1870. I happened to pull it out after many years and found the picture - I did a google search and got this obituary. I'm truly sorry for your loss - I'm sure Jackson was a great guy and it would have been a pleasure to know him.

Just heard the news and I considered Jackson as my best friend as he taught me how to do real estate site selection. My heart and prayers go out to Candy and her two great daughters. Fort Worth lost a great person, dad, and gentleman, and I don't think he is replaceable. God rest his soul.

I worked for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and had my office in the Wilson Building years ago and I have many fond memories of Jackson as my landlord. His humor and his dog, Tex, made each day cheerful. I loved his zest for life and his contagious smile and laughter.

My prayers go out to Jackson's family...prayers for peace and strength.

Jackson was fun neighbor and a great pal for all of us who loved the outdoors. He would always shoot more birds or catch bigger fish. It was his way of mentoring!! My family will always be greatful that he found and sold to us Rocky Top Ranch. I know in his heart he wanted to keep it for his family. It has been a standing rule for 23 years that all you Wilson's know, you are always welcome to hang your hats at Rocky Top. We' ll leave the light on for you and a key under the rock and a cold one in the fridge in honor of POJ.

Candy, Lori & Whitney: I wish I could ease your pain and sorrow. Jackson fought a valiant battle for life, and with great reason -- for the ones he loved. While in ICU, he had the strongest, most loving -- and fun-loving -- cheerleaders anyone could hope for. My prayers and love to you, Cindy Perry (and Mike)
