Kay S. Rhodes
11/20/1924 - 03/23/2012
Resident of Walnut Creek
Kay S. "Dusty" Rhodes died due to complications from a fall that occurred in early January.
Dusty was born in Nampa, Idaho where he lived until he enlisted for military service in the Aviation Cadet program during World War II. Following his service from Dec. 1943 to Sept. 1945, he went to work for Standard Stations Inc. (Chevron) in Boise, Idaho. Eight transfers throughout the west coast led to his to his last assignment as Marketing Manager for Chevron Oil Latin America in San Francisco. He retired after nearly 39 years with the company in 1983.
One of Dusty's greatest pleasures was spending time in their second home in Baja California for 40 years. He enjoyed playing nine-hole golf with the Sons In Retirement group #116. He was an accomplished woodworker, having made furniture, toys and picture frames. Dusty delighted in doing projects around the house as well as for others. He was a long-time ham radio operator (AA6UM) and liked making connections around the world.
He was a charming gentleman with an engaging smile and a good sense of humor. He loved people and enjoyed parties with close friends. Dusty was an avid traveler with his wife, Elaine, and enjoyed traveling to other countries, and took several cruises in retirement. Despite his diabetes, his medical team was in awe of his active life style.
Dusty is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Vera Elaine; daughters Sharon Rhodes-Wickett of Claremont, CA and Kathy Dalziel of Walnut Creek, CA; grandchildren Rachel Gipson (Elliot), Benjamin Rhodes-Wickett, Jeffrey Dalziel and Kevin Dalziel; one great grandson Wesley Gipson; sister-in-law Barbara Rhodes of Coeur d' Alene, ID, brother-in-law Montie McCain of Lewiston ID; two nieces and nephews. His brother Bill predeceased him.
