Boyd Olney Obituary

Boyd M Olney, Jr.
Feb 15, 1929 - June 11, 2015
Resident of Lafayette
Boyd Merrill Olney, Jr., age 86 passed away on June 11, 2015. Boyd was born on February 15, 1929 in Antioch, California to Boyd M. Olney, Sr. and Ann Serra Olney. He was raised in Pacheco, California and resided in Lafayette, California and later at his Ranch in Maxwell, California. Boyd was a loving father and is survived by two children, his daughter Cynthia Olney-Norcom (John), of Reed Point, Montana, and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, and his son, David Olney (Shirley), of Napa, California and his two children, Lauren and Peter.
Boyd M. Olney, Jr. was the owner / operator of Pleasant Hill Bayshore Disposal Company, starting his business as Olney Garbage Service with one truck and nine customers in 1950. His business grew as he obtained garbage collection franchises with Pleasant Hill, Antioch, Benicia, and Clayton, and the unincorporated areas of the county Pacheco and west Pittsburg, and in the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District, Mt. View Sanitary District, and Rodeo Sanitary district.
Boyd was President of Acme Fill Corporation which served Central Contra Costa County. In 1989, Boyd permitted and built the first waste transfer station, which included a recycling center, in central Contra Costa County to deliver municipal solid waste to the Altamont Landfill when landfill space became limited. Boyd acquired and permitted Contra Costa's newest landfill in Pittsburg, California, which opened in 1994, a landfill surrounded by 3,500 acres of open space and with enough landfill space to serve the county for a century.
Boyd loved ranching and operated the Olney Land & Cattle Company with his son, David, raising cattle, horses, buffalo, and crops, including rice, barley, and hay. He also loved restaurants, eating out lunches at various local sites in the County, and he acquired and operated the Maxwell Inn Restaurant in Maxwell, California.
He loved hunting, traveling annually to Colorado with his buddies, and sports. His hobbies included collecting old railroad cars and artifacts of the old West including memorabilia of John Wayne, stage coaches, and surreys.
Boyd had a good heart and a giving spirit. He treated everyone equally no matter what their station in life, he loved socializing with everybody and he quietly helped those in need. Boyd will truly be missed.
Friends and family are invited to a Visitation on Tuesday, June 16, from 6pm to 8pm, at Oak Park Hills Chapel, 3111 N. Main St. Walnut Creek. Not sure what to say?

I remember it was Christmas about 1978 and Suzanne Vlach and myself stopped by the Lafayette home to deliver a present for Boyd and Maxine and Boyd was only in his boxers thinking it was just Cindy coming home. He didn't even bat an eye and invited us to come right in and made us a drink smiled and went back to get dressed. A man of that Stature so down to earth.

I am one of the fortunate people to have known Boyd as a client, mentor and most of all, a friend. Its virtually impossible to describe Boyd unless you met him, and especially had lunch with him. He was a strong confident man, but extremely humble for all his successes. He had the rare ability to treat everyone equally, from dishwasher to Senator, it made no difference to Boyd, he was always a gentleman and treated everyone with respect. The lessons I learned from Boyd over the past 19 years are invaluable and have enabled me to "attempt" to continue his legacy as the owner of Acme Fill Corporation as "Contra Costa County's Pioneer Sanitary Landfill." There will never be another Boyd Olney, Jr., and I am privileged that he took the time to teach me many of life's lessons. God bless you Boyd, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Boyd bought the Rodeo Garbage Service from my parents, Allan and Frances Riemke. He was very generous and thoughtful to them until they both passed away. He gave them very nice gifts and they always appreciated it. My thoughts and prayers are with Boyd's family and friends. God bless you.

Although I only knew Boyd for a short time, he left an imprint on my heart. I will always remember his gentle smile and engaging wit along with his cowboy hat and boots. A fine gentleman, a legend....
