HARRY ADAMSON Obituary

Harry C. Adamson 11-14-1916 - 4-22-2012 Resident of Lafayette The world lost a uniquely talented, kind, and generous man Sunday, April 22, 2012, when Harry Curieux Adamson peacefully passed away at his home in Layfette, California. Harry, who would have been 96 in November, died of natural causes. Harry entered this life on November 14, 1916, in Alkai Point, Seattle, Washington. He was the oldest of three sons born to Harry E. and Augusta Adamson. He grew up just outside Hayward, California. He met his life-long love and future wife, Elisabeth (Betty) Liebhard, during a hike with the Berkeley Hiking Club in 1941, just before he entered the Army, where he spent four years. On a leave home during his tour of duty, Harry and Betty were married October 8, 1944. Their marriage and life together was a beautiful romance. They were two halves of one loving heart. After the war, Harry's life's work was his passion - wildlife oil painting. He and Betty traveled the world together, covering all seven continents, during their 65 years together. They loved observing native birds and cultures of the different regions. They were members of the California Waterfowl Association as well as several well-known nature organizations, and were founding members of the Mt. Diablo Audubon Society. Over the years, Harry donated paintings and prints worth almost $3 million to raise money for various conservation projects and causes. Harry was a uniquely gifted artist and was able to transfer his love of wildlife and its habitat from his soul to the canvass in a way that captured the heart of the viewer. He became a world-renown wildlife artist. He was still painting at age 94 until his health began to weaken. Harry's work has frequently been display nationally and internationally in the prestigious "Birds in Art" and "Animals in Art" exhibitions, and has been shown at the Smithsonian Art Museum, the British Museum, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, among others. He was named the first Californian Waterfowl Association Artist of the Year, and the 1979 Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year. His works can be viewed at the Blue Wing Art Gallery, 405 Main St. Woodland, CA 95695, www.bluewinggallery. com or at www.HarryAdamson.com. Harry was predeceased in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, and his beloved wife, Betty. He is survived by one brother, Charles, and one sister Hermine Pearce, a host of wonderful nieces and nephews, and dear friends Al Eby and Sandy Amaro, and Robert and Linda Whalen. Harry's love for the earth, people and animals of all types was evident in his style and art. He contributed very much to the betterment of all. This quiet-spoken, gentle man will be missed by all who were blessed to know him - personally or through his art. A private, family service will be held in May. A public celebration of Harry's life will be held at a later date if you would like to be notified of the Celebration of Life Service you can contact Blue Wing Gallery at 530-402-2393 or visit www.harryadamson. com

Susan & I met Harry and his wife Betty in 1975. We were asking him do a painting for me as Susan was going to give it to me for my 35th birthday. We visited them many times at their home and at Waterfowl shows over the years.

We took them to my duck club in the Butte Sink so he could see the ducks in action. We could see that he was very good in 1975 but he even got better and better. Both he and Betty were avid bird watchers. They traveled the world to watch many bird species. He mostly painted birds.

But later in his career, he started to paint Wild Sheep. I always admired his Sheep paintings because I was a Wild Sheep hunter and I saw his incredible skill not only of the Sheep but of his very realistic landscapes around the sheep. However the sheep paintings were expensive and we had 5 children to raise and educate so we never bought one. Harry must have remembered how much I liked his Sheep paintings because about one year after his passing, I got a letter from his attorney saying he willed me a beautiful sheep painting that now hangs in our trophy room.

God bless you and Betty!

My husband and I have been fans of Harry's for years. I spoke with Harry and Betty on numerous occasions when making purchases of his work. My greatest regret is that we never got to meet them both in person. They will be sorely missed. There is not another talent such as his in the world of wildlife art. I am so thankful that we own 11 of his painting.

I was introduced to Harry 30 years ago when I was beginning my career in birds. This was a man of great wisdom, kindness, and a deep love of birds. I am truly fortunate to have crossed paths with him.

I knew Mr....and Mrs....Adamson as a young child. I was one of the kids from the Carol Lane neighborhood in Lafayette during the 50s and 60s who had the privilege of visiting his home now and then. That was back when everyone in the neighborhood knew everyone else, and kids could roam freely. Their home was always such a fun place to go. I can remember the smell of oils as we entered the house. I would stare in amazement at one of his paintings in progress and watch him paint. But the best part of all was feeding lettuce to his tortoise(s)...I believe there were more than one. We even got to ride on them....that's how small we all were. This was 50+ years ago, but I can still smell those oil paints in my mind. Mr. and Mrs. Adamson always greeted us kids of the neighborhood with kindness and friendliness. They were a wonderful part of my childhood....obviously unforgettable memories.

Susan and I were honored to be friends of Harry and Betty for many years. Just before our current trip we were able to spend time with Harry 3 days before his death, and talk about the new migrants coming to our yards. Harry was very special in our lives.

I think of Harry and Betty every day as I enjoy the paintings all over my house. Suison Marsh will not be the same anymore. Irwin and I enjoyed their friendship. We are blessed to have known them and fondly remember the dedication of the wetland site in their memory. Judith Garvey and Irwin Nowick
