Edward Ahearn Obituary

Edward N Ahearn, M.D.
October 15, 1932 – December 4, 2017
Resident of Moraga
Edward Newport Ahearn of Moraga died Monday, December 4, 2017 at the age of 85.
Born in 1932 in White Plains, NY, Edward was the son of Edward F and Margaret Ahearn (née Newport), and spent his youth, along with sisters Margaret and Dorothy in Westchester County, NY and St Louis, MO where he matriculated from St Louis University High School. Edward received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University in 1954, and his Medical Degree from Georgetown University in 1958, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and won the Baker Medal for outstanding work in anatomy.
It was in 1957 during his clinical rotations and internship at the District of Columbia General Hospital that he met his future bride, Marlene Simko, a nurse. They married 2 years later and spent the first 7 years of their married life with the Air Force where Edward served as a Captain at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, in Cincinnati where he completed his Pediatrics Residency, and at Tachikawa Air Force Base near Tokyo, Japan. After completing his Air Force service, Edward returned to Cincinnati with his wife and young son Gregory to complete his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
In 1968, Edward accepted a position at Children's Hospital Oakland and relocated his family to Moraga, California; shortly thereafter, daughter Cathleen was born. Edward spent the balance of his distinguished career at Children's Hospital Oakland. He served a term as President of the Children's Hospital Medical Staff and was awarded the Medal of the Bronze Bambino Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. He also served one term as President of the East Bay Pediatric Society. Edward retired from practice in 1997 but remained active at Children's for many years, attending Grand Rounds and serving on the Hospital's Board of Directors.
During his retirement, Edward could always be found as an usher at the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Mass at St Monica's Catholic Church. He was an active member of Sons in Retirement (SIRs) 171 and the St. Monica's Men's Club where he served a term as president and volunteered for many years as a 'Muffin Man', continuing a long-standing commitment to service. He was a devoted and involved father, a voracious reader and had a keen appreciation of music; he loved travel – especially beach vacations with family and friends – and riding his bicycle.
Edward is survived by Marlene, his wife of 58 years, son Gregory and daughter Cathleen. He will also be remembered by "bonus" daughters Brenna Stauffer and Lucie (Olaf) Kroettinger, adopted grandchildren Austin and Catherine Stauffer, and Emily and Caden Kroettinger, numerous nephews and nieces, and many dear friends. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at the Rossmoor Parkway Manor Care for the kindness they have shown over the past year.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St Monica's Catholic Church, 1001 Camino Pablo, Moraga, California, 94556 at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017.

I believe this is the same Dr. Ahearn who was my brother's pediatric cardiologist. Michael lived from 1965 to 1973, and this period overlaps with Dr. Ahearn's stay at Oakland's Children's Hospital.

I ended up getting an M.D. as well. Several years into my medical career, I decided to locate Dr. Ahearn, probably in the 1990's, to ask if I might have the opportunity to review Michael's chart given that I now had an understanding of cardiology and was curious to see what my brother went through (I was a teen during his difficult life).

Dr. Ahearn not only invited me to his office to review Michael's chart, he met me in person and answered any questions I had. He said he remembered Michael well. He also kept a small photo of Michael that I believe he gave to me.

Thank you for all you did for my brother. I'll never completely get over his loss. Though we only met once, I got the feeling you were a noble person.
