Clinton Crusberg Obituary

On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, Clinton W. Crusberg, D.V.M., devoted husband, loving father of two children, and doting grandfather of two grandchildren, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife and children, at the age of 63 in Houston, TX.
Clint was born on August 25, 1957, in Hartford, CT to Walter and Naomi Crusberg. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from New Mexico State University in 1981, and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in May of 1985. He married his high school sweetheart, Lisa Duffield on June 23, 1979, at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, NM. They were blessed with a son Jared in 1981 and a daughter Jennifer in 1983.
Clint recognized at a young age he wanted to be a veterinarian and thanks to the Jack London novel, "Call of the Wild", he dreamed of living his own adventure in Alaska; so he combined the two loves and joined the US Army Veterinary Corps in 1986. He was commissioned as a Captain; and asked to be stationed in Alaska, where after short assignments to TX, and NM, he got his wish and was assigned to Fort Wainwright, AK in 1988. He packed up his young family and took two weeks to travel from Florida to Alaska, stopping at every landmark and state park, camping along the way-it was quite the adventure. Over the course of the next four years, he earned numerous military awards and accommodations. He signed up for every opportunity the Army offered; earning his Expert Marksmanship badge, Airborne/Air Assault wings at Fort Benning, GA, his Emergency Field Medic Badge, and attending Officers Advanced Courses. He loved the adventure of it all. When the military gave him orders to leave Alaska in 1992, he opted to leave the military and opened a private mixed animal practice in Delta Junction, AK. He doctored all creatures, great and small, wild and domestic for the next 28 years; loving every minute, living his dream, and teaching his children to love it too. Some of his greatest stories revolved around hunting and fishing with his son and daughter or with friends and extended family members; the trophies on the wall speak for themselves.
He was a skilled outdoorsman who loved, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, gold dredging, skiing, snowmobiling, and tried his hand at dog mushing. He volunteered for years on the Yukon Quest 1000 mile dog sled race, even serving as head veterinarian. He passed on his love of life to all who knew him. He was a lover of animals, music, books, ice hockey, and coin collecting. He was especially proud of his beautiful, green, and manicured lawn, working tirelessly to keep it free of pine cones (his nemesis). He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, robust belly laugh, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
He considered his greatest honor to be called "Deda" by his grandson Lucas and "Pop-Pop" by his granddaughter Peyton; they are what he lived for, and he showered them with all the love he could muster. His favorite time was spent in their company, just watching them learn and grow or teaching them a life skill. He always said, "Material things don't matter, life is only about the love of family".
Clint was preceded in death by his father, Walter C. Crusberg, LTC (R) USAF. He is survived by his wife Lisa (Duffield) Crusberg of Delta Junction, AK; his son Jared Crusberg and wife Jana, grandson Lucas Myles of San Angelo, TX; daughter Jennifer (Crusberg) Smith and husband Kyle, granddaughter Peyton Lynn of Salcha, AK, his mother Naomi (O'Donnell) Crusberg of Sugarland, TX; his brother Keith, wife Karen of Newport News, VA; sister Karen (Crusberg) Stone and husband Craig of Richmond, TX, brother Bill and wife Lea of Sugarland, TX; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He leaves behind his extended family of in-laws from Myles and Patricia Duffield of Clovis, NM lineage totaling 51 members. Most dear to Clint was his boyhood friendships spanning over 50 plus years who are forever friends and who will miss him every day to come. He loved the community and people of Delta Junction and they loved him; his passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
There is no doubt that Clint is now walking with our Lord and Savior, regaling him with stories of his extraordinary life. In keeping with Clint's wishes, there will be no service; ashes to be spread at his favorite hunting and fishing locations, with final resting on the island of Kauai.

Today I was telling a vet here in Fairbanks about how I loved taking my animals to you when Jim was working in Delta and I lived there. They told me you had passed. Tonight I shed tears as I read your stories. Thank you for just being you and caring for my fur babies.

Clint and I were military brats that played on the same little league team and shared every outdoor adventure we could as kids. Our parents careers sent us to different parts of the country but we tried to keep in touch with letters (remember those) Thirty-five plus years later, out of the blue, I contacted Clint and our friendship was renewed without missing a beat. Clint and his gracious family invited me to AK and allowed me to participate in Crusberg adventures. They showed me an AK that Clint said "people on a cruise ship wouldn't see" they did and for that I am forever indebted. Over the years I could count on getting texts/mail/packages from Clint that always included much thought and a twist of humor. Topics always included our respective families and ultimately our grandchildren.
While visiting with Clint it was easy to see that he was well liked and respected by every one that knew him. I have always considered it a privilege to have Clint as a friend.
Clint, I still owe you a turkey hunt.

There wasn’t a better friend to be had in veterinary school! Clint was always there for us. Whether being the only other New Mexico shoulder to lean on or helping make a taxidermy pheasant. He and Lisa (and by default, Jared) even helped us along with our relationship. Babysitting is a good way to give a couple of 21 yr olds a reality check! Clint showed us what it’s like balancing a career, family, and fun. Our hearts and prayers go out to Lisa, Jared, Jen, and the grandkids. That “Ole’ Gubernaculum Head” sure will be missed!

Truly one of the greatest men to have honored us with his friendship , expertice, and grace. An exceptional man that fought courageously for every patient was taken from this world all too soon , a tragic irony of Loss that can never be understated.

Where to start? So many adventures shared with Clint, and his family. There were hunts, fishing trips, time with the Yukon Quest, time with my son and Clint’s family (one night playing poker stands out), trips to the cabin at Sand Lake, and I am literally just scratching the surface. I was fortunate enough to share adventures from Kotzebue to Kodiak with him. Clint was kind enough to share his wonderful family with me: Lisa, Jared, and Jennie. I am sorry I left Alaska before the grandkids arrived. Because of him I was also blessed to meet so many of his extended family and friends.

Needless to say, Clint made my life so much richer than it would have otherwise been. He was your best friend in 5 minutes with that wonderful personality of his, and if you were as lucky as I was, that friendship lasted for years.

Clint was the poster child for a life well lived in every aspect! I will miss you my friend. Thank you!

Dr. Clinton Crusberg was a wonderful and compassionate man. He hired me as a Red Cross volunteer for Eielson AFB Veterinary Clinic. I ended up working there for 19 years. He helped me enjoy my dream of helping animals and he was so fun to work alongside. I will always be grateful for his mentoring. My deepest and heartfelt condolences for all his family and friends. As long as one of us remembers him, his star will glow in night sky.

I was so saddened to see that Clint passed away. He was the best vetrinarian and best friend to animals. Clint gelded some of our horses, spayed and neutered our dogs, gave all the animals their shots. I remember one night our horse kicked a porcupine crossing their pasture and the back of the horses legs were filled with quills. Clint spent hours that night with a headlamp on pulling every quill out of a very upset horse. He was able to soothe the horse down with talking to him. He always had a way with animals I never saw before. Animals loved him, we loved him. We won't ever forget you Clint. We pray for comfort for your family. Clint your love and kindness always prevailed. I pray we all meet again. Say hello to all of our friends on The Rainbow Bridge.

What a fantastic guy. I will truly miss him. Wish I would have stopped by on my way through Delta. Always thought so highly of him. And talk about a Great fisherman. That guy could catch kings on the Gulkana. Lisa and family Diane and I mourn with you.

Dr. Crusberg was very passionate about veterinary medicine and truly loved the community of Delta. I was lucky enough to meet and interact with him as I was the owner of MMAH in Fairbanks. Just not Delta, but Alaska has lost a good man and veterinarian. Sadly, Dr. Crusberg died on my birthday and he died too young. I wish the family, friends and colleagues peace.

I met Clint when he was a Vet for the Yukon Quest. He was the funniest guy on the trail! We were just talking about Clint the other day and how he had the best sense of humor. What a sad day, to read of his passing. Peace be with you Clint.

I always have fun when I am with Clint Crusberg. It didn’t matter if we were razor clamming in Ninilchick, Dip Netting at Chitna or eating his black pepper gizzards from the IGA deli.

We had fun on many Moose hunts in Jarvis creek drainage and Dickey lake.

We had more fun on 2 memorable caribou hunts, one on a raft/float hunt in ANWR with Burt, Grant, Robert and Leyland. The second, which he told me many times, was one of his favorites, Flyin in a river drain north of Kotzebue with Burt and Matt.

I am grateful that my path crossed Clint’s and that I was able to call him my friend. May you rest in peace.

Oh this makes me so very sad. Clint held such a special place in Brooks’s and my lives - from his thoughtful care of our dogs and funny antics at our wedding. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

I called Clint family because he and his friends were such a big part of our family when he was growing up. Back then, I thought I was their "second Mom". Memories of Clint will be cherished by my family who loved him. Lisa, may you and your family be consoled and protected by our Lord. Anita Merrill

I met Clint and family when they were stationed at Fort Wainwright in conjunction with my work for the army. His personality drew me to him as a friend and he introduced me to his family shortly after. He was there for me as a friend when I was struggling with things in my personal life and would give me the shoulder I needed until things got better. We tried hunting sheep but they didn’t cooperate, I shared a bear bait with him but he ran out of time before the bears volunteered their presence. He offered gold panning advised and help with another sheep hunt when I was drawn for Delta area and had knee surgery two weeks prior to my hunt. Clint was a generous caring man and I will miss my friend and Brother very much.

What an adventurous life Clint lived!
Things I will always remember, how welcoming he was, his laugh, helping to say goodbye to out Abby dog, the jar of porcupine quills along with the story of him pulling them out of dogs snouts when dogs became too curious, the BEAUTIFUL green lawn that felt like carpet beneath you, the smile you got when you brought McDonald's from North Pole and most of all Clint's love for Lisa, Jared, Jen and those grandbabies. He enriched each of our lives just by knowing him.
We will miss you.
