Thomas Joseph Price

Las Cruces - Thomas Joseph Price PhD, 80, joined his wife, Judy, on April 9th, 2021 in Las Cruces, NM.

Tom was born in September 1940 in Charleston, SC. He attended Bishop England High School and called alma maters, The College of Charleston, University of Chicago, and Florida State University where he met his wife, Judy.

Tom built a career and family in El Paso where he taught Political Science at the University of Texas El Paso for 30 years and had two sons. In early 1991 due to career changes for Judy, they moved up the road to Las Cruces and built a home. Tom continued to teach at UTEP until his retirement in 2001. Tom always had a camera in hand, taking pictures of his most valued interests-his family; after retirement, he found the time to explore the beauty of nature and honed his photographic eye. He also enjoyed painting and travel, always able to find the things that made him happy: good friends, good food and drink, and beautiful things. He enjoyed life to the very end.

Tom is survived by his sons, John and Joseph. He was preceded in death by his wife Judy, and his siblings, Nancy and Edward.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Albert the Great, Newman Parish, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Friday, April 30, at 10am. For those who are unable to attend, a streaming link will be available.

My deep condolences to the family of Dr. Price. I met Dr. Price during an event honoring another longtime colleague, Joseph Graves. I still remember Dr. Price's "Light the Fire" speech when he was asked to say a few words about his former colleague. From speaking with him, I got a good sense of the fun times everyone had in the early days of the department. RIP, Dr. Price, you are not forgotten.

My sincere condolences to the family of Thomas Price, I was a student of his in a class called International Politics. He gave me a global perspective that I will always be grateful for. It is still one of the most enjoyable classes I have taken and continues to help me in teaching my own students today. To the family and friends of Dr. Price

I speak for decades of UTEP students who had the privilege of taking political science courses from Dr. Price.

Extremely knowledgeable and articulate and an exemplary teacher. Dr. Price was highly respected on campus as a true scholar.

I have vivid recollection of some of his lectures and I recall how methodical he was in his presentations.

I am happy to see that he was able to enjoy time away from the classroom as a photographer.

May Dr. Price rest in eternal peace and my the Good Lord watch over all of Dr. Price’s family and friends.

John and Joe, my condolences on your father's passing. He was a great photographer and we are so grateful that a selection of his photos are on permanent display at the County Government Center, right outside of the Community Development Department where your mom would have worked. Your dad was a good man who will be dearly missed, Rest in Peace, Tom!

Tom and my late husband Bob Burns became friends when Tom began taking wonderful photos of musicians at the Las Cruces Music in the Park series which Bob started and produced for many years. We were so grateful for his talent and those photos!

John and Joseph, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I continued to see him as a patient for quite a few years after your mom passed away. I haven’t seen any of you for some time now , but I enjoyed knowing your family. It’s always sad to lose your parents, but we are meant to carry on. I wish you the best in your future lives!
