Robert Kiel Obituary
Robert Vincent Kiel, D.O., age 67, of Fairview, Pa., passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, as the result of an accident. He was born in Corry, Pa., on February 28, 1946, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Kiel.
Bob was a 1967 graduate of Cathedral Prep and attended Gannon University before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Following graduation he worked as a pharmacist for two years. Bob returned to school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned his degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He continued his studies through a fellowship to specialize in Gastroenterology. He became Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Addiction Medicine. Bob established his medical practice in Erie from 1979 until his retirement in 2011. He was a member of the Erie Physicians Network and Medical Director of Crossroads and Millcreek Community Hospital Detox Unit.
Bob semi retired from UPMC Erie Physicians Network where he served the community in Kane, Pa.
He was a charter member of the Church of the Cross and a member of the Friends of Bill Wilson, Erie Runners Club, and Koinonia of Erie County K-1, and various medical organizations. He enjoyed fitness, especially running marathons; travel with his wife in his RV; and fishing with his grandson.
Bob is lovingly survived by his wife of 44 years, Elaine Kiel; one daughter, Robin Kiel McDonnell (David); sister-in-law, Jean Horensky; two brothers, Dr. Joseph Kiel (Gail) and Kenneth W. Gates; and his grandson, Davis McDonnell.
The family would like to give their appreciation to Select Specialty Hospital for their loving care given to Bob.
Friends may be received at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday at the Church of the Cross from 10 a.m. until time of the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. A private interment will be held at Restland Memorial Cemetery, Monroeville, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Cross, 5901 Millfair Dr., Fairview, PA 16415 or International Doctors in Alcoholics Anonymous Scholarship Fund, 2616 NW 25th Place, Gainesville, FL 32605.

Dear Elaine
I think about Bob often and I miss his wit and his friendship. As you know, he helped me in more than I can express. It was Bob who introduced me to IDAA and that has become a big part of our recovery. Pam and I talk about him and you often and we both miss all of the couples time we shared together. I am profoundly saddened to learn of the death of my friend Bob Kiel. What a tragedy and loss to all of us left behind. Elaine, my good friend, ...I am so sorry for your loss...of your dear husband.
Joan and I have mountains of happy memories ....of being with the two of you as a couple....all those great IDAA's we spent together...year after year each and every August. What a great time we had at the BDDG in Exeter, England...and Bob being willing to drive us all over England on the wrong side of the road!

Dear Elaine and Robin,
Was shocked and saddened to hear of your loss, and for those of us who had the opportunity to get to know him...our loss. We all started our careers around the same time at MCH and in many respects grew up together. Was so thrilled when he and you decided to retire, yet heartbroken that selfishly I would have to try to search for a new physician. I adored his dry sense of humor. I am so saddened to hear about the loss of Dr. Kiel. He was my doctor for about 8 years. Dr. Kiel always made me feel so comfortable when he treated me. I felt like he was the best person in the world to treat me for my UC. Words could never express how much he meant to me. I will never forget all he did for me and how much he helped me.
