Fred Collins Obituary

FRED C. COLLINS, 80, of New York City, passed away at Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006. Born in Fort Wayne, October 7, 1925 the son of the late Frederick and Dora Collins. He became an announcer for WOWO radio in the 40s and headed to New York to make his way. He applied for and won a job at NBC in 1948 where he worked as a staff announcer for 21 years. Know as "the voice of the NBC Peacock" he did everything from voice over narrations and the news to master of ceremonies on the Saturday night Jazz scene in Manhattan in the 50's, live on the NBC Network. Fred went on to be the voice on hundreds of local and national television and radio commercials and was one of the best that the industry ever had, before or since. Beloved husband to, Margot Collins; devoted father to, Elizabeth Jane Collins of New York City, Van Allen Collins of Norwalk, Conn., stepdaughter, Vicki Haupt and late stepson, Steven Haupt, both of New York City; sister, Grace Meyers of Ariz. He was predeceased by brothers, Charles and Allen; sisters, Isabelle Collins and Dorothy Rahe, both of Fort Wayne. "He was loved by many and will be sorely missed."
