Jeremy Graczyk Obituary

ATKINSON — Maj. Jeremy James Graczyk, USMC, 33, a decorated Marine and combat veteran, died on July 12 in a BASE jumping accident while in Switzerland.

Jeremy was born on Aug. 29, 1977, in Atkinson to James and Darlene Graczyk. Jeremy was a highly intelligent and ambitious individual who graduated as valedictorian in 1995 from Timberlane Regional High School.

He attended college at the United States Naval Academy, where he was co-captain of the rugby team his senior year. He was a two-time Collegiate All-American whose speed and size went unmatched.

Jeremy received a bachelor of science degree in Systems Engineering in 1999.

After completing his academic studies, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a platoon commander in the infantry and led Marines during the initial invasion of Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

He was later reassigned to a Force Reconnaissance unit as a reconnaissance platoon commander. He also served as an Infantry Company Commander during combat operations in Iraq.

Upon his return to the United States, he was reassigned to Headquarters Marine Corps, where he deployed over seven times to Afghanistan and Africa.

He was promoted to the rank of major in 2009.

His awards include three Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medals, one Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Combat Action Ribbons, Presidential Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Citation, two National Defense Service Medals, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals, five Iraq Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and seven Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

Jeremy was the quintessential renaissance man who embraced living each day to its fullest. He spent many years traveling the world as a free spirit and developed countless friendships along the way. His interests included rock climbing, motorcycle riding, skiing, skydiving, travel, reading, rugby and all-night discussions that showcased his love of learning and respect for knowledge.

He had an infectious commitment to each moment.

Jeremy was beloved by all and influenced many people throughout his lifetime. His generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family and friends. He lived his life with integrity and courage.

Jeremy is survived by his parents, James and Darlene (Shoop) Graczyk of Atkinson; sister and brother-in-law Jennifer (Graczyk) and Aaron Sakash of Somersworth, nephews, Aidan and Gabe Sakash, maternal grandparents, Richard and Leora Shoop of Shippensburg, Pa., and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, July 21, 2011 from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow.

His funeral with full military honors will take place on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Atkinson Congregational Church, Main St., Atkinson, followed by rendering of military honors by the United States Marine Corps.

Burial will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery

Please accept my deepest and most sincere condolences, I just found out today. Jeremy was a special person. He was my Company Commander in 2007 1/4 Bravo Co. Very few times in life do we come across people like Jeremy. He was the consummate Professional as a Marine, but he did things his way. As a leader, Bravo Company would follow him to Hell and back no questions. He was only on this earth for a short time, but he made it count! Semper Fi Bravo Six and God Bless.

Yesterday, while reading Jeremy’s Grandfather’s obituary, I learned that Jeremy was gone from this world. I taught Physics at the U. S. Naval Academy and lived there with my wife Karen and two sons Baden and Luke. I was one of three officers on the Service Selection Board that approved Jeremy to become a Marine. We really didn’t have to select him, he had selected Marines long before, and there was nothing we could do about it. On all those boards reviewing all those candidates, Jeremy was the most perfect match. He spoke, walked, and played all things Marine.

I had often wondered, which country was he roaming? Which battle was he leading? Selfishly, I hoped he might settle down back in Shippensburg on the Shoop farm in Middle Spring. I retired to a house just up the road, and I thought I might catch up with Jeremy and get to hear about his career as a Marine. Maybe, I would get to tell him a bit of my 20 years as a Submariner. That will have to wait till I hopefully catch up to him somewhere, someday, God be willing.

I am very proud to have known Jeremy, and I am deeply sorry for his family’s loss. My son came back from sea today. He is a Lieutenant in the Sub force. I will talk to him in a few minutes, and I will have a different perspective, because Major Jeremy Graczyk lived and died, a man, a Marine, a leader that touch the lives of many.

Jeremy was the most fearless man I have ever met. I remember Jeremy at the Cliffs of Moher...everyone was afraid to get close to the edge except Jeremy. Jeremy just stood at the very edge looking over the 700 foot drop-off without an ounce of fear. He lived the rest of his life the same way and truly fulfilled the New Hampshire motto "Live Free or Die" to its fullest. My sincerest condolences to his family. Although he is no longer with us, his impact on my life and so many others will never be forgotten.

Jeremy and I were in the same company and class at the Naval Academy. He was the kind of guy that, from the moment you met him, you knew he was in a different league, someone meant to do great things. He is absolutely one of the most genuinely impressive individuals I have ever met in my life.

To the Graczyks, I am so sorry for your loss. God Bless.

I played All Marine Rugby with Jeremy for several years. His tough play and fitness were always inspiration to the rest of the team. I was just a lowly E-2 for most of camps but Jeremy always treated me as if I was a fellow officer. Sad to hear one of my favorite Marine ruggers is no longer with us. My prayers are with you.

I was at the All Marine Rugby Camp in 2006. Major Graczyk was the toughest rugby player I have ever met and probably the toughest Marine. I remember him being upset about the medical staff trying to put stitches in his chin. A true leader, role model, fun guy, and legitimate bad@ss. I am sad to see him go too soon.

To the Graczyk family my sincere blessings for you all during this difficult time of loss. My son, Cpl William Riecke has shared with me his admiration for your son as he bravely lead his Marines during the initial invasion of Iraq. He said that he was an amazing man of honor and he is proud to have served under his leadership in the US Marines. From one proud Marine mom to another I pray for a sense of peace in the days ahead. Maj Gracyk mission accomplished Sir, rest in peace, God bless you.

Many years earlier as a young sixth grader, Jeremy's path joined mine. Jeremy was a student in my Tech. Ed. classes, for all three of his middle school years. I recall those years with great fondness and I extend to his family and close friends my thoughts and prayers.
I am certain Jeremy heard, "Well done, good and faithful servant," when he was met at Heaven's gate.
God's peace be with each you.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Maj Jeremy James Graczyk our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jeremy. And to Jeremy it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Jeremy, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Jeremy’s family and loved ones.

Jeremy’s tremendously positive contributions to his friends, the Marine Corps and his country will continue to resonate well beyond his passing. I had the pleasure of leading (or trying to keep up with…) him when he was a 2nd Lieutenant in 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. His contagious enthusiasm and unmatched professionalism will continue to inspire me to be a better officer and man. My sincerest thanks go out to Jeremy's parents and family for raising such a gentleman and sharing him with the Marine Corps.

I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful young man. Although his loss to his family is immeasurable, his loss to our country will also be deeply felt. I did not have the honor of knowing this fine young man, but I have taught many students who possess his fine qualities. Currently, I have a number of former students who are serving our country in military installations all over the world. They are carrying on his legacy, and I pray every day for their safe return. May his family find comfort knowing what an exemplary son they have raised and shared with all of us.

Please help welcome this hero home TODAY! (7/20 between 2:00 and 4:00) Put your flag out and fly it high! Salute or place your hand over your heart as the procession drives through town, pauses at the Atkinson Town Green, or at his childhood home on Walker Street. Clearly Jeremy was a great man, completed his mission on earth, and was called home by the lord where we will all thank him and serve with him upon our arrival.
