John McCooey Obituary

John E. McCooey

DOVER - John E. McCooey, 72, gently passed away, in the arms of his family, Monday October 27, 2014 at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston from complications following surgery.

Born in Portsmouth, August 5, 1942 son of John Edward and Anne (Quirk) McCooey. He lived in Dover all of his life and was a graduate of Dover High School, class of 1960 and graduated from St. Anselm College. He enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Fla.

After graduating from college he worked for the State of New Hampshire, Welfare Department. In 1984 he started his own business, New England Emergency Response Systems in Dover. His college friend, Paul Dubois, joined the business and they built a successful company for over 20 years.

John was a 36 year veteran of the Board of Commissioners of the Dover Housing Authority, and served as chair from 1998-2013.

He stood up tall for children. He had a sharp intellect and a strong "debate team" type of style. John was a strong and tireless advocate for children in the DHA neighborhoods. He wanted opportunities for children living in homes for low income residents. He championed the afterschool program at Woodman Park School and championed the HeadStart program as well as the Community Police officer in collaboration with the Dover Police Department.

His family includes his fiancee Mary Vangen of Dover and Sarasota, FL, family members include his sister Anne B. McCooey of Portsmouth, three brothers David McCooey and wife Virginia of Rochester, Patrick McCooey and wife Harriet of New York City, and James McCooey and wife Patricia of Jamestown, RI. He also leaves his nieces and nephews, Karen Gravel, Susan DiPrizio, Jeremy McCooey, Beth McCooey Johnson and John D. McCooey and cousins.

Friends are invited to call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday Nov. 1st at Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut & Third Sts. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Family flowers only and memorials in his name may be made to the Seymour Osman Community Center & Youth Safe Haven, 40 Hampshire Circle, Dover, N.H. 03820

John was two years ahead of me at Dover High School and I still remember his rhetorical ability as a junior and senior. He honed his skills in the Debate Club and you had to really be on your toes when diving into a serious subject with him. In this respect he got better with age. My condolences to the extended McCooey family.

John was a dedicated member of the Board of Commissioners of the Dover Housing Authority for 36 years. He worked hard to learn the complexities of public housing often attending trainings and inquiring of others. He knew his stuff. He had a keen sense of humor and a hearty laugh. He shared his thoughts and concerns freely challenging others to do the same. His lifelong love of debating and debate team competitions was evident and often displayed. He formed his opinions based on facts and reasoning. He changed his mind based on cogent arguments. He made the DHA a better place with his persistence and loyalty. He supported and championed children. HIs efforts leave a lasting legacy. He will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

To Mary and the McCooey family, We are heartbroken by the loss of John. He was the best neighbor when we lived at Davis Farm. Our driveway talks were the best. His wisdom and wit was second to none. His friendship we will always cherish. He was one in a million. Until we meet again my friend, hit 'em straight. And, in case you need it, god will be available to help you with your short game! Love, Alice and Jeff

To the family of John McCooey, please accept our deepest sympathies. We were John's neighbors for just over a year in Davis Farm, and we always had great conversations whenever we saw him. We could never have asked for a better neighbor. He was the best. Though we did not know him long, he made a great impression on us, and we will miss him greatly.

The obituary touched on many wonderful aspects of John's life and personality. I would also like his family and friends to know how instrumental he was in assuring that services to people with developmental disabilities and mental illness remained intact in Strafford County. John served on the Board of Developmental Services and was President when we merged with Strafford Guidance Center. Both organizations were troubled but found a path to success largely based on his countless hours of dedication, fulfilling the responsibility he felt in that volunteer role. He assured that the voices of all constituents were heard and understood before proceeding with policy or direction. I know he believed in and acted the same way in his role as Board President of Southeastern NH Services. Those of us who watched and learned from his style are terribly sad at this suddenness of his passing. He will be missed.
