Henry Brooks Obituary

Mr. Henry Stanford "Josh" Brooks, age 73, of Frederick passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020. He was born in New York, NY on February 9, 1946 to parents Thomas Brooks and Anita Abramovitz (nee Zeltner).

Josh grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and spent many summers in Vermont. He graduated high school from The Solebury School in New Hope, PA. He attended Bard College and graduated from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. His life experiences were rich and varied, including a long standing career in radio. In 1969, he attended Woodstock and cofounded Spiritus Cheese, the radio program which became the genesis of the Washington D.C. progressive radio station WHFS, 102.3 FM. In 1983, Josh helped promote the first In The Street Festival and fell in love with Frederick. He moved to Frederick soon after and worked at various local radio stations. Josh volunteered weekly reading to the students at Lincoln Elementary and was a supporter of the ARC of Frederick. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and racquetball, and was a dedicated and founding member of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek.

Josh was married to Trish Brooks (nee Noonan) for 33 years. He is survived by his two children, Jori Blouin, Zachary Brooks and partner Dulcie Bomberger and son Kai; his sister, Antoinette Brooks-Floyd, step-sister Margorie Brink; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by sister Cora Brooks.

The family will receive friends from 12pm until the start of the memorial service at 2pm on February 9, 2020 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to The ARC of Frederick County, 620-A Research Court, Frederick, MD, 21703.

In the early 70s Josh often had a very late night stint where his calmness and earthiness was a reassuring connection to a young me who occasionally needed to hear his voice in order to be able to settle back in contact with the planet.

Ah, Josh, you and Spiritus Cheese made me feel part of the family at the legendary WHFS from the first time I heard you, several years before I joined you at the station. Thank you for all the wonderful music you turned me onto, and the great times we had! Catch you on the flip side, my friend ❤

I miss waving to Josh sitting outside on his stoop in his PJs doing his crossword puzzle. Speaking of crossword puzzles... do we have the solution for the crossword puzzle from the service..? There are too many that I cannot solve =)

I remember how much fun Josh was to hang out with. We had great times listening to live bands in DC, and he was always a good sport and ready to pull pranks or live extemporaneously. We bought umbrella hats at the beach and he started wearing them at the Root Boy SLim shows. I still have mine. We shared a place in Cabin John and it seems like yesterday. I will miss you, my friend.

Josh was a good friend and coworker. We are family at WFMD/WFRE. He always had kind words and kept a smile on his face even when he spoke to me about his aches and pain. He was strong and courageous and will surely be missed. RIP.

Don't even know where to start, Josh was so much more than a friend. A trivial pursuit partner a mentor a mixed tape pal for years and years. I am completely heartbroken at this loss. I'm a music nut and Josh and I could talk music for hours, hell days even. We shared so much over the years....so many memories. I shall think of you Josh everytime I hear a good one. Peace my friend

Thank you Josh for sharing your love of great music. Im not sure what I would have done without WHFS growing up in Montgomery County. I listened to it all the time, bought a portable radio to carry with me when I was driving a car without FM. RIP, you brought so much joy and peace to many.

To say that Josh and I were friends would be an understatement. We were best friends. Six weeks ago we had lunch at Wags and he said his back hurt. Now this. Life is certainly unpredictable. My thoughts are with Josh's family. Rest easy my friend. I will miss you.

Josh was so generous with his time and the students he read to at Lincoln Elementary benefited from his caring, friendly manner. He was well loved by the staff as well. Rest In Peace

So thankful for the over-the-air musical education I got from "Joshua" as a teen listener of 102.3 back on Cordell Avenue. Never dreamed Josh and I would later become such good friends up here in Frederick, and that opportunity is something for which I will be forever grateful. They don't come any better than Josh Brooks. Peace and love be with the entire Brooks family.

Josh was a 12 when others were a 10! Josh was Music, Josh was Frederick Happenings, Josh was a Great Family Man, Josh was a Good Soul who helped so many people in his life time. Josh was an Entertainers Entertainer. Josh is gone too soon. And I am so sad for his lovely family, friends and relatives. xxxooo Leslie
